Audubon’s Riverfront for All Project: Transforming New Orleans’ Historic Wharves into a Vibrant Park

Phase One Set for Completion in Early 2026, While Plans for Phase Two Remain Uncertain

Riverfront Revitalization: Audubon Nature Institute’s Ambitious Project Takes Shape

New Orleans, LA — Nearly nine months into the transformation of two historic French Quarter wharves into a vibrant downtown riverfront park, the Audubon Nature Institute is making significant strides. The first phase of the $30 million project, which includes the redevelopment of the Governor Nicholls Street Wharf, is on track for completion in early 2026.

Audubon President and CEO Michael Sawaya expressed optimism about the progress but acknowledged that plans for the second phase, focusing on the Esplanade Avenue Wharf, are currently in flux. “Everything is up in the air,” Sawaya stated after last week’s Audubon Commission meeting. “This has got to be the next great destination for our city, and we have to do it right.”

A New Vision for the Esplanade Avenue Wharf

Originally estimated at $15 million a decade ago, the project’s budget has swelled to $55 million, with the second phase expected to exceed that figure. Sawaya emphasized the need for a fresh approach, stating, “We are looking at a whole new concept” for the Esplanade Avenue Wharf, which is nearly 30% larger than its counterpart.

The project aims to create street-level access to the river, connecting the pedestrian-friendly areas of Spanish Plaza and Woldenberg Park with Crescent Park, ultimately providing 2.25 miles of continuous riverfront access.

Community Engagement and Revenue Generation

As part of the new vision, Audubon is soliciting proposals from vendors to operate a commercial kitchen and concessions space within the cultural shed, which will serve as a hub for community events and activities. Sawaya hopes to host small-scale concerts and arts festivals, generating revenue to support the park’s maintenance.

“We want the operator to come in, give us their ideas, and tell us what they see there,” he said. Additionally, Audubon plans to sell naming rights to the shed to further bolster funding.

Addressing Community Concerns

The previous plans for the Esplanade Avenue Wharf included ambitious attractions like a Ferris wheel and amphitheater, which raised concerns among local residents about noise and congestion. The new approach aims to balance community interests with the need for revenue-generating attractions.

Sawaya is hopeful that the vendor selected for the Gov. Nicholls Street Wharf will play a role in shaping the future of the Esplanade Avenue plans, fostering a collaborative environment that addresses community concerns.

Future of Crescent Park

While the Riverfront for All project is gaining momentum, the future of Crescent Park remains uncertain. Originally part of the vision under former CEO Ron Forman, discussions about Audubon taking over management of the park have stalled. Sawaya indicated that the timing is not right, given the city’s budget constraints, but he remains open to revisiting the conversation.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the first phase of the Riverfront for All project prepares for its public debut during the French Quarter Festival in April, the community eagerly anticipates the revitalization of this historic area. With a commitment to creating a space that serves both residents and visitors, the Audubon Nature Institute is poised to redefine New Orleans’ riverfront experience.
