Concerns Over Future Funding for SNAP in Republican-Led Farm Bill

The future of federal food assistance for millions of Americans is in question as the Republican-led Farm Bill advances in Congress. Democrats are raising concerns that funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may fall short under the proposed legislation.

In North Carolina, where about 15% of the population relies on SNAP benefits, Democratic Rep. Alma Adams expressed her worries about the potential impact of the bill. The left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has warned that the bill could create a $30 billion shortfall in SNAP funding over the next decade, with North Carolina facing a shortfall of over a billion dollars starting in 2027.

Adams emphasized the importance of providing adequate support for those in need, stating, “We’re talking about $6 a day, $2 a meal. I just don’t think people should be penalized because they are poor. And that’s what we continue to see. We need to have more compassion for people who, no fault of their own, find themselves in situations like this.”

While Republicans defend the legislation, stating that SNAP benefits will increase based on inflation, critics argue that funding should consider other factors such as changing shopping patterns. Despite the controversy, the bill received bipartisan support in the House Committee on Agriculture, with some Democrats, including North Carolina Rep. Don Davis, voting in favor.

The bill now moves to the full House for consideration, with a deadline of Sept. 30 to pass a new Farm Bill. However, it is uncertain whether the current bill will garner enough support in the Senate, where Democrats may push for changes to ensure adequate funding for SNAP and other nutrition assistance programs.
