Navigating Monsoon Hair Care: Expert Tips to Keep Your Locks Luscious

As the monsoon season sweeps across the country, it brings with it a welcome respite from the sweltering heat. However, this season also ushers in a host of hair and skin concerns, including dandruff, itchiness, and frizz. With the humidity levels soaring, many are left wondering: is oiling still a viable hair care option during the rains?

To shed light on this pressing issue, we turned to Dr. B.L. Jangid, a renowned dermatologist and hair specialist at SkinQure Clinic in New Delhi. His insights reveal that while oiling has long been a trusted tradition, the monsoon’s dampness requires a more strategic approach.

The Oiling Dilemma

Dr. Jangid advises against the age-old practice of overnight oiling during the monsoon. “It’s advisable to apply oil 2–3 hours before a head shower. Keeping it on overnight can clog scalp pores and mix with sweat and dirt, leading to bacterial or fungal infections,” he warns.

However, he emphasizes that this doesn’t mean you should abandon oiling altogether. “Approach it smartly,” he suggests.

Do’s and Don’ts for Monsoon Hair Care

1. Avoid Overnight Oiling:
Humidity can make your scalp sweaty. Leaving oil on overnight can create a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.

2. Oil 2–3 Hours Before Washing:
This allows your scalp to absorb nutrients without clogging pores or making your hair greasy.

3. Choose Lightweight Oils:
Heavy oils like castor or thick coconut oil can be too dense in the monsoon. Opt for lighter, non-sticky oils like neem, tea tree, or argan, which also offer antimicrobial benefits.

4. Add Essential Oils Sparingly:
A few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil can enhance scalp health and improve circulation. Use them in moderation.

5. Use Mild Shampoo and Conditioner:
Always follow up oiling with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to wash off residue. A light conditioner or anti-frizz serum can help retain moisture without weighing down your hair.

6. Target Dandruff with the Right Products:
If you’re facing dandruff or itchiness, switch to antibacterial or antifungal shampoos, and avoid experimenting with DIY remedies.

7. Dry Your Hair Completely Post-Wash:
Leaving your hair wet or tying it up can exacerbate scalp issues. Pat it dry thoroughly and let it air-dry before styling.

When to Seek Help

Dr. Jangid also highlights that if you experience severe hair fall during the monsoon, it’s crucial to consult a dermatologist. “Hair fall can be due to various reasons such as hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, or side effects of medications,” he explains. “A customized treatment plan is always more effective than a one-size-fits-all remedy.”

The Final Verdict

Monsoon hair care is all about striking the right balance. While oiling can nourish your scalp, it must be done wisely to avoid complications. With these expert tips, you can enjoy the rainy season without compromising on your hair health.
