Putin Concludes State Visit to China, Strengthening Ties Amid Global Tensions

In a significant diplomatic move, Russian President Vladimir Putin wrapped up a four-day state visit to China on September 3, which included participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and a grand military parade in Beijing commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Upon his arrival at Beijing Capital Airport, Putin was seen off by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov, before heading to Vladivostok for the Vladivostok Economic Forum.

During his visit, Putin engaged in extensive discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting the “unprecedentedly high” level of cooperation between the two nations. The leaders signed over 20 bilateral agreements covering a wide array of sectors, including energy, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and agriculture, aimed at deepening their strategic partnership.

In a notable meeting, Putin also conferred with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, underscoring the close ties among Russia, China, and North Korea amid escalating geopolitical tensions. This trilateral alliance was marked by coordinated stances on regional and international issues, as well as military cooperation.

The visit culminated in a reception at the Great Hall of the People, where Putin met with families of Soviet World War II veterans, reinforcing historical ties while looking toward future collaboration.

Key Statements from Putin

Before departing Beijing, Putin addressed Russian journalists, making several noteworthy remarks:

  • On Ukraine: “Ukraine’s security cannot be ensured at the expense of Russia’s security,” he stated, while also affirming that “each country has the right to choose its own security system.” He criticized the West for using the Ukraine conflict to address its economic challenges, but expressed cautious optimism about a potential resolution, saying, “It seems to me that there is a certain light at the end of the tunnel.”

  • Energy Cooperation: Discussing the newly signed agreement for the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline to China, Putin emphasized that the deal is based on mutually beneficial terms and market principles, dismissing any notion that it was timed to coincide with his visit.

  • U.S.-Russia Relations: Reflecting on his interactions with U.S. President Trump, Putin remarked, “Relations are good, we address each other by name,” and noted that all leaders at the SCO summit supported a meeting in Anchorage, Alaska.

Multipolar World Vision

Putin also touched on broader geopolitical themes, advocating for a multipolar world order. “The unipolar world must cease to exist,” he declared, emphasizing that no nation should dominate politically or in security matters. He called for equal rights among all countries in international relations, reinforcing the role of the SCO in promoting a fair global order.

As the military parade showcased over 12,000 troops from China’s People’s Liberation Army, it served as a powerful reminder of the military capabilities of both China and Russia, two nuclear powers increasingly aligned against Western dominance.

The partnership between Russia and China, solidified through organizations like BRICS and the SCO, is seen as a strategic counterbalance to U.S. influence, particularly in light of ongoing global challenges.

As Putin’s visit concludes, the implications of this strengthened alliance will likely resonate across international relations, signaling a shift towards a more multipolar world.
