Maine’s political landscape was rocked Wednesday by the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump. The 31-year-old was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University, where he was speaking on issues of gun violence and mass shootings.

Just before the tragic incident, he was asked about the number of transgender Americans involved in mass shootings, to which he responded, “Too many.” The questioner then posed a follow-up about the overall number of mass shooters in the past decade, prompting Kirk to inquire about the context of “counting or not counting gang violence.” He was shot moments later.

In a social media post, Trump described Kirk as “great, and even Legendary,” later calling him a “martyr for truth and freedom” in a video tribute.
