Exploring the Future of Data Centers in Duluth: Opportunities and Challenges

Duluth Data Centers: Balancing Opportunity with Environmental Concerns

DULUTH — As the demand for data centers surges, the Northland’s cold climate is increasingly seen as a prime location for these energy-intensive facilities. However, this growth raises significant concerns regarding energy and water consumption. On September 11, the Area Partnership for Economic Expansion (APEX) hosted a member meeting titled “Demystifying Data Centers,” where industry experts discussed the implications of this burgeoning sector.

Lucas Mistelske, representing Ark Data Centers, provided insights into the operational realities of data centers. With 13 years of experience in Duluth and 12 facilities across eight states, Ark has become a key player in the industry. “Data centers are designed and built to maximize our uptime as business operators,” Mistelske explained. “They support everything from manufacturing lines to financial systems, ensuring they operate 24/7.”

Energy Efficiency and Legislative Scrutiny

As data centers become larger consumers of energy, they are increasingly under the media spotlight, prompting legislative scrutiny and rapid changes in community regulations. Mistelske noted that Ark’s primary expense is power, emphasizing the importance of efficiency. The Green Grid platform, a tool for measuring power usage effectiveness, has helped the industry improve its efficiency score from 2.5 in 2007 to 1.56 today, with 1.0 being the ideal.

The meeting also highlighted various cooling technologies, including liquid cooling systems that do not consume water in the traditional sense. “Liquid cooling doesn’t mean you are consuming water,” Mistelske clarified, explaining that these systems are designed to efficiently manage heat without compromising electronic components.

Architectural Innovations

Architect David Loehr from Cushing Terrell discussed the architectural and engineering aspects of data center development. His firm has designed facilities for major clients like Google and the Department of Defense. Loehr pointed out that globally, there is a staggering $7 trillion investment in data centers, which account for about 4% of the nation’s electrical consumption.

“People are rightly concerned about water and power consumption,” he said, emphasizing the need for efficient designs that mitigate these concerns. He noted that the Northland’s cool climate is advantageous for data centers, allowing for natural cooling solutions that can protect vital water resources.

The Impact on Local Infrastructure

Mechanical Engineer Frank Frederickson from Minnesota Power addressed the implications of data centers on the electrical grid. “Almost three-quarters of our energy is sold to industrial customers,” he stated, highlighting the grid’s capacity to handle large loads. While some argue that data centers drive up electric bills, Frederickson explained that in regulated markets, costs can be spread across customers, potentially lowering rates.

He also discussed the transition to renewable energy, noting that Minnesota Power has increased its renewable energy share from 5% to 50%, with plans to reach over 80% soon. Despite the challenges of permitting and regulatory hurdles, Frederickson remains optimistic about the future of data centers in the region.

Conclusion

As Duluth positions itself as a hub for data centers, the balance between economic opportunity and environmental responsibility remains a critical conversation. With advancements in technology and a focus on sustainability, the Northland can harness the benefits of this industry while safeguarding its natural resources for future generations.
