Here’s How Trump’s Proposed Plan for Peace in Gaza Would Function

Trump Proposes 20-Point Plan to End Israel-Hamas Conflict: Key Details and Reactions

Trump Unveils 20-Point Plan to End Israel-Hamas Conflict, Gains Netanyahu’s Support

Washington, D.C. — In a bold move aimed at resolving the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, President Donald Trump presented a comprehensive 20-point plan on Monday, which he described as a “roadmap to sustainable, long-term peace.” The proposal, unveiled during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House, has garnered Netanyahu’s backing, though the response from Hamas remains uncertain.

The plan calls for Hamas to release all Israeli hostages within 72 hours and outlines a phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces from parts of the Gaza Strip. It also proposes the establishment of a “technocratic” committee to govern Gaza and the deployment of a temporary security force supported by Arab nations.

Immediate Ceasefire and Hostage Exchange

At a joint press conference, Trump emphasized the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, stating that both Israel and Hamas would halt military operations if they agree to the plan. Netanyahu echoed this sentiment, asserting that the proposal aligns with Israel’s war objectives. If Hamas rejects the offer, he warned, “Israel will finish the job by itself.”

The plan stipulates that within 72 hours of acceptance, Hamas must free approximately 50 remaining hostages, while Israel would reciprocate by releasing 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 others detained since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023. This date marks the beginning of hostilities that have resulted in the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis.

Demilitarization and Humanitarian Aid

A key component of the plan is the demilitarization of Gaza, which would be monitored by independent observers. The proposal outlines the destruction of weapons factories and tunnels, with guarantees from regional partners to ensure compliance. Additionally, it promises immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has been grappling with severe food shortages and famine conditions.

Aid deliveries would be coordinated by international organizations, bypassing controversial local groups. The plan also envisions the establishment of a “special economic zone” in Gaza, aimed at fostering economic redevelopment.

New Governance Structure

In a significant shift, the plan suggests that Gaza be governed by a “technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee,” rather than Hamas or the Palestinian Authority. This committee would be responsible for public services, while an “International Stabilization Force” would oversee security and train local police forces.

Trump is slated to chair a “Board of Peace” to ensure the plan’s implementation, stating, “I’m very busy, but we have to make sure this works.”

Pathway to Palestinian Statehood?

While the proposal does not explicitly outline a clear path to Palestinian statehood, it acknowledges the aspiration for self-determination. Netanyahu has historically opposed the formation of a Palestinian state, criticizing international recognition efforts as “absurd.”

The plan also promotes interfaith dialogue to foster understanding between Israelis and Palestinians, aiming to reshape narratives and mindsets on both sides.

Uncertain Future

As the world watches closely, the response from Hamas remains a critical factor in the plan’s viability. Negotiators from Qatar and Egypt have engaged with Hamas, who have indicated they will review the proposal “in good faith.” However, unanswered questions linger regarding the specifics of Israeli withdrawals and the roles of various international partners.

As the situation evolves, the international community remains hopeful that this ambitious plan could pave the way for a lasting resolution to one of the most protracted conflicts in modern history.
