Multimillion-Dollar Port Upgrade to Propel Michoacán’s Growth

Mexico’s Ministry of Economy Intensifies Development Efforts in Michoacan with MX$57 Billion Investment Plan

Mexico’s Economic Boost: Michoacán Set for Major Development

Michoacán, Mexico – In a bold move to revitalize the economy of Michoacán, Mexico’s Ministry of Economy has announced plans to triple efforts aimed at driving economic development, attracting investment, and generating jobs in the region. Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard unveiled these initiatives as part of “Plan Michoacán,” a comprehensive strategy built on 12 pillars and over 100 actionable steps, backed by a staggering MX$57 billion (approximately US$3.1 billion) in mixed investment.

“The President asked us to triple the effort because economic development is essential to the Plan, creating employment, increasing investment, and opening opportunities,” Ebrard stated during the announcement.

Key Components of Plan Michoacán

The economic strategy focuses on three pivotal Development Poles:

  1. Bajio Development Pole: Located near Morelia, this pole will accelerate ongoing projects to enhance local economic activity.

  2. Agroindustrial Development Pole: Set to launch immediately in Uruapan, this initiative aims to boost value-added agricultural production, tapping into the region’s rich agricultural potential.

  3. Port of Lazaro Cardenas Modernization: In collaboration with the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), this project will enhance the port’s infrastructure, including the creation of a cold chain system and expanded container terminals to support exports.

Significant Investment in Maritime Infrastructure

Ebrard confirmed that the federal government, alongside private sector partners, will invest MX$14 billion (US$750 million) to upgrade the Port of Lazaro Cardenas. This investment is part of a broader national initiative to strengthen Mexico’s maritime infrastructure and enhance economic competitiveness.

This effort aligns with the federal government’s national port modernization plan, announced on July 23, 2025, which involves over MX$296 billion (US$15.9 billion) in public and private investments across nine strategic ports, including Ensenada, Manzanillo, and Veracruz.

A Multimodal Hub in the Making

As part of the modernization, Lazaro Cardenas is evolving into a multimodal hub, integrating new terminal expansions by APM Terminals and Hutchison Ports, alongside enhanced customs and road infrastructure. Meanwhile, other ports like Ensenada and Manzanillo-Cuyutlan are receiving significant investments in tourism and logistics, while Acapulco, Veracruz, and Progreso are undergoing capacity upgrades.

Looking Ahead

With these ambitious plans, Michoacán is poised for a transformative economic journey. The focus on education, healthcare, housing, and dignified employment aims to address the structural causes of insecurity while fostering a thriving economic environment. As the state embarks on this new chapter, the eyes of the nation will be on Michoacán, eager to witness the positive changes that lie ahead.
