Nirenberg Enters Bexar County Judge Race

Ron Nirenberg Challenges Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai in Democratic Primary

Nirenberg Challenges Sakai in Bexar County Judge Primary: A Fight for Visionary Leadership

San Antonio, TX — In a surprising political twist, former San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has announced his candidacy for the Bexar County Judge position, challenging incumbent Peter Sakai in the upcoming Democratic primary. Nirenberg, who served as mayor from 2017 to 2021, is positioning himself as a candidate for change, arguing that Sakai lacks the vision necessary to lead a rapidly growing county.

“I don’t think that office is performing the way it should. It’s been reactionary to major issues. And frankly, we need strong leadership,” Nirenberg stated in an interview with the San Antonio Report. His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among voters who are increasingly demanding proactive governance in the face of pressing challenges.

The political landscape for county judgeships in Texas has shifted dramatically in recent years, with traditional incumbents being replaced by more ambitious and sometimes partisan figures. Notable examples include Lina Hidalgo, who unseated longtime Republican Harris County Judge Ed Emmett in 2018, and Tim O’Hare, who took over from Glen Whitley in Tarrant County in 2022.

Nirenberg, known for his confrontations with GOP state leaders during his tenure as mayor, clarified that his goal is not to create conflict but to foster a more engaged and proactive leadership style. “The county judge has the bully pulpit and has the ability to set the tone for this entire community,” he said. “It doesn’t mean we’re looking for a fight, but it does mean that sometimes we’ve got to end them.”

The race comes on the heels of a significant leadership transition in Bexar County, following the retirement of longtime County Judge Nelson Wolff in 2022. Sakai, a moderate and former district court judge, won a competitive three-way primary against two younger, more partisan Democrats. He has focused on refocusing county resources on core responsibilities, such as overseeing the courts, jail, and elections.

However, Nirenberg argues that the county can do more, citing Wolff’s legacy of innovation and responsiveness to community needs. “He didn’t limit the role of the judge’s office to what was simply written in blueprint,” Nirenberg noted, emphasizing the need for a broader vision that addresses the region’s evolving challenges.

As of July, Sakai had approximately $435,000 in his campaign account, while Nirenberg is starting from scratch. With the filing period for the March 3 primary now open until December 8, the race could see additional candidates entering the fray.

In a pointed response to Nirenberg’s challenge, Sakai suggested that if Nirenberg truly wanted to address the significant issues facing Bexar County, he should consider running against a Republican. “I find it interesting that Ron Nirenberg has chosen to take on me as county judge — a Dem versus a Dem fray,” Sakai remarked during a panel at the Texas Tribune Festival.

Nirenberg’s political ambitions have evolved since his mayoral tenure, during which he briefly considered challenging Republican Governor Greg Abbott. He has since established a federal PAC and a state PAC, Texans for Ron Nirenberg, to support his future endeavors.

Reflecting on his decision to run for county judge, Nirenberg stated, “As I’ve gone through this discernment period, the question in my mind has always been, where can I be most helpful and impactful to move our community forward?” He believes that local leadership is crucial for addressing broader political challenges.

As the primary approaches, the stakes are high for both candidates, with Bexar County’s future leadership hanging in the balance. Voters will soon decide whether they prefer Sakai’s moderate approach or Nirenberg’s vision for a more dynamic and responsive county government.
