Empowering Women in Politics: Insights from the Acadiana Women’s Network Event

Acadiana Women’s Network Celebrates Female Leadership at Annual Event

Lafayette, LA – The Acadiana Women’s Network gathered on Wednesday, August 20, at Ruffino’s on the River for its signature annual event, “Leading Through Legislation,” shining a spotlight on the influential voices of women shaping Louisiana’s political landscape.

Presented by Our Lady of Lourdes and supported by Jones Walker LLP, the program featured a dynamic discussion with State Representatives Julie Emerson (District 39) and Annie Spell (District 45). Moderated by Keely McGibboney of Louisiana Economic Development, the conversation delved into leadership, policymaking, and the future of the state.

The Acadiana Women’s Network, known for organizing impactful professional development events throughout the year, positioned this gathering as a pivotal moment for women leaders across the region. Attendees included business owners, professionals, and civic advocates, all eager to gain insights from the two lawmakers, whose careers represent different stages of public service.

Emerson, who is completing her final term after nearly a decade in office, and Spell, a newcomer elected in 2024, shared their unique perspectives on the challenges and opportunities women face in politics. Spell reflected on her early months in the legislature, describing them as both challenging and energizing. She credited her colleagues for laying the groundwork for significant policy shifts, particularly the ongoing transformation of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

“As I came in this past regular legislative session, a lot of heavy lifting by colleagues had already happened,” Spell noted. “These changes will lead to improved infrastructure, making Louisiana and Lafayette a better place to live and do business.”

Spell emphasized the importance of balancing Acadiana’s rich cultural identity with the need for economic progress. “The Lafayette area is a hub of Cajun culture and history, which is unique and valuable,” she said. “But we are also moving forward in economic development and infrastructure improvements.”

Emerson, who first ran for office at the age of 27, shared her experiences navigating the political landscape. “There are many women leaders in our community who play a significant role in economic development,” she said. “It’s crucial to encourage women to stay involved in the government process.”

She urged younger women to pursue public service without waiting for the “perfect timing.” “I was very young when I ran. I would tell young women, ‘Don’t let anyone tell you they can’t do it. Jump in, work hard, and prove everybody wrong.’”

The conversation, guided by McGibboney, highlighted key issues from the recent legislative session, including economic development, infrastructure, and workforce opportunities. However, the event also underscored the importance of women’s voices in a historically male-dominated arena.

Spell noted that events like “Leading Through Legislation” create valuable spaces for women in business and government to share strategies, build relationships, and learn from one another.

As the evening concluded, attendees mingled and reflected on the discussions, echoing Emerson’s message: women’s voices are vital in shaping Louisiana’s future.
