Actors’ Equity Secures Tentative Broadway Deal, Preventing Strike

Actors’ Equity and Broadway League Reach Tentative Agreement, Averting Strike Threat

Broadway Averts Strike as Actors’ Equity Reaches Tentative Agreement with League

In a dramatic turn of events, Actors’ Equity has successfully negotiated a tentative agreement with the Broadway League, sidestepping a potential strike that loomed over the iconic theater district. The breakthrough came after an intense mediation session that stretched into the early hours of Saturday morning, concluding at 6 a.m. ET.

The union, which represents actors and stage managers, announced the agreement following a marathon negotiation that addressed key issues affecting its members. Al Vincent Jr., executive director of Actors’ Equity, expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, “This three-year agreement saves the Equity-League Health Fund while also making strides in our other priorities, including scheduling and physical therapy access.” He emphasized the importance of bringing the deal to members for ratification while extending support to AFM Local 802, which is still in negotiations with the League.

While specific details of the agreement remain under wraps, it is known that health insurance contributions had been a significant sticking point in earlier discussions. The urgency of the negotiations was underscored by Equity’s recent vote to authorize a strike if necessary, with members signing strike pledge cards as a show of solidarity. The union’s previous contract had expired on September 28, heightening tensions in the lead-up to the agreement.

Meanwhile, Local 802 AFM, representing Broadway musicians, continues to negotiate its own contract with the League. The musicians’ contract has also expired, and they have voted to approve a strike if needed. Local 802 President Robert Suttmann expressed gratitude for the progress made by Actors’ Equity, stating, “We are thankful that our brothers and sisters in labor at Actors’ Equity have reached an agreement. Everything remains on the table, including a strike.”

As Broadway gears up for a potential ratification vote, the theater community holds its breath, hoping for a resolution that will ensure the lights of Broadway continue to shine brightly.
