Indian Luggage Industry Set for Robust Growth, Projected to Reach Rs 267 Billion by 2028
Indian Luggage Industry Set for Robust Growth Amid Travel Resurgence
New Delhi, September 14 (ANI) — The Indian luggage industry is poised for significant growth, projected to reach ₹267 billion by 2028, marking a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12% from an estimated ₹170 billion in 2024. This optimistic outlook comes from a recent report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services, highlighting a remarkable recovery from the pandemic’s impact.
The industry, which saw a drastic decline to ₹60 billion in 2020, has rebounded impressively, achieving a 37% CAGR from 2020 to 2023. The report attributes this resurgence to a transformative shift in India’s travel landscape post-pandemic, with a notable increase in air and rail passenger traffic driving luggage sales.
“Consumers are increasingly opting for branded, stylish, and durable luggage over basic utility products,” the report states, indicating a trend towards premiumization in the market. This shift is further fueled by the rise in disposable incomes and urbanization, particularly among young consumers.
Weddings Boost Demand
An interesting factor contributing to the luggage market’s growth is the surge in wedding-related travel. The report notes that the demand for luggage has significantly increased due to traditional gift-giving customs and the growing trend of destination weddings. The peak demand period is expected to coincide with the wedding season, particularly in November and December 2024, when over 4.8 million weddings are anticipated.
“Weddings are a crucial driver of recurring luggage demand, especially among young urban consumers,” the report emphasizes.
Market Dynamics
Currently, branded players dominate the market, holding a 52% share and expected to outpace overall industry growth. Leading brands like VIP, Samsonite, and Safari collectively command about 33% of the market. The mass market segment, priced below ₹4,000, constitutes approximately 60% of the industry, with brands like Safari leading the charge.
The mid-priced segment, accounting for 30% of the market, features well-known names such as VIP and American Tourister, which leverage brand recognition and strategic marketing to attract value-conscious consumers. Meanwhile, the premium segment, though smaller at around 10%, is rapidly evolving, with legacy brands like Samsonite maintaining a stronghold.
Digital Disruption
The report also highlights the emergence of digital-first direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands that are reshaping the luggage landscape. These brands appeal to Gen Z and millennial consumers through minimalist designs and influencer-driven marketing strategies, capitalizing on the growing trend of online shopping.
As the Indian luggage industry continues to recover and expand, it reflects broader trends in consumer behavior and travel, positioning itself as a vital sector in the nation’s economy. With increasing travel opportunities and evolving consumer preferences, the future looks bright for this dynamic industry.
