China-Egypt Partnership Fosters Civilizational Dialogue

China and Egypt Unite to Preserve Ancient Civilizations: A New Chapter in Archaeological Cooperation

China and Egypt Unite to Preserve Ancient Civilizations

BEIJING, Sept. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Nile River, a symbol of ancient grandeur, continues to flow through history, connecting the past with the present as China and Egypt embark on a collaborative journey to safeguard their rich legacies. This partnership is breathing new life into the remnants of ancient civilizations, showcasing the importance of cultural preservation in an ever-evolving world.

From the summer of 2024 to 2025, the Shanghai Museum hosted the groundbreaking exhibition “On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt.” This remarkable showcase featured 788 rare artifacts, including over 400 newly unearthed treasures, drawing an astounding 2.78 million visitors. The exhibition highlighted the fruitful outcomes of joint archaeological projects between the two nations, emphasizing their commitment to cultural exchange.

The collaboration began in earnest in 2018 when Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences signed a protocol, leading to China’s first full archaeological mission in Egypt. Excavations at the Montu Temple ruins in Luxor’s Karnak Temple Complex marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership aimed at uncovering and preserving ancient history.

In addition to archaeological digs, both countries are working to nominate significant sites for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status, including China’s Baiheliang Ancient Hydrological Inscription and Egypt’s Rawda Island Nilometer. These efforts reflect a shared belief in the value of cultural diversity and the importance of protecting historical legacies.

Yan Haiying, a history professor at Peking University, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. “China and Egypt, both heirs to ancient civilizations, stand as mirrors to one another,” she stated. “This comparative research not only deepens mutual understanding but also enriches each side’s sense of identity.”

The exhibition in Shanghai marked a shift in how Egyptian culture is presented in China. Unlike previous shows that were often curated by Western institutions, this exhibition was independently organized, showcasing the results of joint archaeological efforts. “Without the collaboration between China and Egypt, these newly unearthed relics could never have come to China,” Yan noted.

Xue Jiang, a researcher at the World Art History Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the shared characteristics of ancient Egyptian and Chinese civilizations. His team’s field research in Egypt has led to long-term collaborative projects focused on digitizing artifacts and creating a trilingual database for better accessibility and preservation.

Both experts agree that this strengthened cooperation will not only enhance cultural exchanges but also contribute to the safeguarding of world civilizations. “Every civilization shines with its own brilliance, and all stand equal,” Xue remarked. “As heirs to these legacies, we bear the responsibility of safeguarding world heritage.”

As the partnership between China and Egypt continues to flourish, the renewed focus on cultural heritage is inspiring both nations to celebrate their histories and foster a deeper understanding of their shared past. With each newly unearthed artifact, national pride swells, reinforcing the importance of preserving cultural treasures for future generations.

In a world where the past often feels distant, the collaboration between these two ancient civilizations serves as a reminder of the enduring power of history and the shared responsibility to protect it.
