CNN Launches “CNN Creators”: A Bold Step into the Creator Economy
CNN Enters the Creator Economy with Launch of CNN Creators Initiative
Doha, Qatar — In a bold move to stake its claim in the burgeoning creator economy, CNN has unveiled its latest initiative, CNN Creators, during a press event on Thursday. This new unit, based out of the network’s recently established Middle East hub in Media City, Qatar, aims to redefine how news is presented to younger audiences through innovative storytelling.
Set to debut on October 23, CNN Creators will feature a 30-minute weekly show that promises to be “unlike any show we have ever launched,” according to CNN International executive Meara Erdozain. The program will focus on news-adjacent topics, delivering content that resonates with viewers by being “real, relevant, and relatable.”
Leading the charge is Andrew Potter, a former producer at Vice Media, who will steer the team towards exploring themes such as AI, technology, art, culture, sports, and social trends. This strategic direction aligns with CNN’s ongoing digital transformation, as the network seeks to engage a younger demographic increasingly drawn to diverse content formats.
The launch of CNN Creators comes at a pivotal time for the network, which is undergoing a significant digital reimagining. Following the closure of its ill-fated CNN+ app in 2022, the network is set to introduce a standalone subscription product this fall, testing a metered paywall on its digital content. This initiative is part of a broader strategy initiated by former New York Times business chief Mark Thompson, who has been steering CNN away from its traditional 24/7 cable TV roots.
Thompson’s vision includes a $70 million investment aimed at shifting CNN’s focus towards platforms where audiences are increasingly congregating. This includes a relaunch of CNN Audio as CNN Podcasts and the introduction of new lifestyle offerings, all while integrating linear and streaming programming teams.
CNN Creators appears to be a fresh chapter in this evolving narrative, reminiscent of the network’s earlier foray into digital innovation with “iReport for CNN” in the 2000s. However, this time, the creators are seasoned producers with journalism backgrounds, promising a departure from the conventional news anchor desk format.
The upcoming show will feature a unique competitive format, where two teams of content creators will go head-to-head each week. They will select a topic, embark on a creative journey, and present their final pieces in an energetic live showdown. Viewers will gain insight into the creative process, from brainstorming to editing, making it a dynamic viewing experience.
As CNN continues to adapt to the rapidly changing media landscape, the launch of CNN Creators marks a significant step in its mission to connect with a new generation of viewers, ensuring that the network remains relevant in an era defined by digital content and creator-driven narratives.
