Hollywood’s Power Players Gather to Honor David Zaslav at Humanitarian Award Dinner Amid Uncertain Future for Warner Bros. Discovery

Beverly Hills, CA – In a night filled with camaraderie and reflection, Hollywood luminaries gathered at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Humanitarian Award Dinner on Thursday to honor Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. The event, held at the opulent Beverly Wilshire ballroom, came at a pivotal moment for the company, which recently announced it is up for sale.

Among the attendees were industry titans such as David Ellison, Ted Sarandos, and Apple’s Eddy Cue, all of whom engaged in lively discussions while personalized congratulatory messages from major studios like Paramount, Disney, and NBCUniversal flashed across screens. The atmosphere was electric, underscoring the significance of Zaslav’s recognition amid the swirling uncertainties surrounding his company.

The evening’s highlight was the presentation of the Humanitarian Award by legendary filmmakers Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg. Both icons praised Zaslav for his philanthropic efforts and his commitment to combating antisemitism. Spielberg, in particular, drew parallels between Zaslav and the early moguls of Hollywood, recalling the studio’s courageous decision to release the first anti-Nazi film in 1939.

“They felt a responsibility to history and did not hesitate to take up the fight,” Spielberg remarked, emphasizing Zaslav’s ethos as a champion for justice. Their friendship spans two decades, rooted in their shared commitment to the Shoah Foundation and their joint commemorations of Holocaust anniversaries.

In his acceptance speech, Zaslav expressed gratitude to Spielberg for his unwavering support during his tenure at Warner Bros. “I don’t normally do these kinds of things, but I thought this was an important moment for me to stand up and be very clear about who I am,” he said, reflecting on his Jewish heritage and the importance of fighting for freedom and democracy.

Zaslav recounted a personal story from 15 years ago when his company acquired a Polish broadcast network that provided an alternative to state-controlled news. He highlighted the dangers of government censorship, stating, “When the government controls the news, that is the end of democracy.” His words resonated deeply, reminding attendees of the power of storytelling in shaping society.

He acknowledged his executive team, emphasizing that their legacy would not be measured by profits but by the stories they tell. “We need to tell original stories. This is our time,” he declared, urging the industry to embrace creativity and authenticity.

The evening raised an impressive $4.3 million for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, further underscoring the event’s significance. CNN’s Dana Bash was also honored with the Jewish Heritage Award, humorously noting, “It says a lot that being a proud Jew gets you an award.” Additionally, Aya Meydan and Omer Shem Tov, a former hostage of Hamas, received Medals of Valor for their bravery.

As the night drew to a close, Zaslav’s poignant reminder to “tell the stories and fight for ideals that keep us safe and free, even when it’s hard” lingered in the air, leaving attendees inspired and reflective about the role of storytelling in today’s world.
