Dead & Company Launch Grateful Dead Celebration in San Francisco

Celebrating 60 Years of Grateful Dead: Night 1 at Golden Gate Park Brings Joy to 55,000 Deadheads

Grateful Dead Music Resonates at Golden Gate Park for 60th Anniversary Celebration

San Francisco, CA — The air was electric with nostalgia and joy on Friday night as approximately 55,000 Deadheads gathered at Golden Gate Park to kick off a three-day celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the iconic Grateful Dead. Fans of all ages, from those who remember Jerry Garcia’s legendary performances to younger generations who never had the chance, united under the stars, ready to “smile, smile, smile.”

The evening was hosted by Dead & Company, a beloved offshoot of the original band featuring longtime members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, alongside guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, and drummer Jay Lane. The band, which recently concluded its touring career in 2023, has found ways to keep the spirit alive, including recent performances in Las Vegas.

As the sun set, the crowd was welcomed by Trixie Garcia, Jerry Garcia’s daughter, who commemorated what would have been her father’s 83rd birthday. Earlier in the day, she participated in a ceremony renaming a portion of San Francisco’s Harrington Street in honor of her father, adding a personal touch to the evening’s festivities.

The first set kicked off with a somewhat subdued energy, featuring six songs over an hour. Weir, now 77, took the lead on five tracks, including the classic “Feels Like a Stranger.” While the initial tunes felt lackluster, seasoned fans understood that Night 1 often serves as a warm-up for the band, especially after a break.

However, the momentum shifted as the band found its groove with “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” showcasing Mayer’s impressive guitar work. The set continued with Johnny Cash’s “Big River” and concluded with a heartfelt rendition of “Althea,” featuring Mayer on lead vocals.

After a brief intermission, the band returned with renewed vigor. They invited Grahame Lesh, son of founding member Phil Lesh, to the stage for a poignant performance of “Box of Rain,” a tribute to his late father. The energy soared as they transitioned into “Estimated Prophet” and the anthemic “Eyes of the World,” highlighted by Burbridge and Chimenti’s stellar contributions.

The night reached a peak with the epic “Terrapin Station,” but the band managed to elevate the experience even further by bringing out opening act Billy Strings for a powerful rendition of “Wharf Rat.” The show closed with the familiar strains of “Not Fade Away” and an encore of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” leaving fans buzzing with excitement.

As the first night of the 60th anniversary celebration came to a close, anticipation grew for what the following nights would bring. With Dead & Company continuing their tribute to the Grateful Dead through Sunday at Golden Gate Park’s Polo Field, fans are eager to see how the celebration unfolds.

Setlist Highlights:

  1. “Feel Like a Stranger”
  2. “Dancing in the Street”
  3. “Tennessee Jed”
  4. “Box of Rain”
  5. “Wharf Rat”
  6. Encore: “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”

As the music echoed through the park, it was clear that the spirit of the Grateful Dead lives on, uniting generations of fans in a celebration of love, music, and community.
