Delhaize Enhances Data Governance with BearingPoint to Drive Business Agility and Trust

Delhaize Partners with BearingPoint to Revolutionize Data Governance

AMSTERDAM, Oct 23, 2025 — In a bold move to enhance operational efficiency and foster a data-driven culture, Delhaize, the prominent supermarket chain in Belgium and Luxembourg, has announced a strategic partnership with BearingPoint. This collaboration aims to transform Delhaize’s data governance framework, addressing the challenges posed by its rapid growth and decentralized operations.

Historically, Delhaize faced significant hurdles due to siloed operations, where various divisions relied on disparate legacy systems and ad-hoc practices. This fragmentation resulted in inconsistent insights, hampering the supermarket’s ability to ensure accuracy, accountability, and transparency across its operations.

Recognizing the critical need for unified data governance, Delhaize embarked on a multi-year initiative with BearingPoint. The project began with a comprehensive audit of existing data practices, identifying gaps in quality, monitoring, and ownership of business information. Armed with these insights, the two organizations set out to implement a formal data governance framework, establishing key roles such as data owners and stewards to ensure strategic alignment and accountability.

“By integrating governance into the business, Delhaize can now transform trusted data into compliant, strategic outcomes,” said Jan Henderyckx, Partner at BearingPoint. The new framework not only enhances data quality but also promotes a culture of collaboration, where cross-functional teams share responsibility for data management.

The initiative has already begun to yield results. With clearly defined roles and standardized processes, Delhaize has improved operational efficiency, allowing teams to focus on higher-value work rather than reconciling inconsistent metrics. The emphasis on data literacy and ownership has fostered a stronger collaborative environment, positioning Delhaize to leverage insights for innovation and future growth.

Xavier Valentini, Director of Data & Analytics at Delhaize, highlighted the unique value proposition that BearingPoint brings to the table, combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of the grocery retail sector.

As Delhaize continues to roll out this structured data governance framework across its operations in Belgium and Luxembourg, it plans to extend these practices to its sister companies, Alfa Beta Vassilopoulos in Greece and Mega Image in Romania.

With a workforce of 32,000 employees and 809 stores, Delhaize is committed to providing its customers with over 20,000 quality products, ensuring a seamless shopping experience both online and in-store. The supermarket chain holds a significant market share of 22.5%, according to Nielsen.

As Delhaize embraces this transformative journey, the partnership with BearingPoint marks a pivotal step towards unlocking the full potential of its data, paving the way for enhanced business agility and trust in the retail sector.
