In a historic turn of events, India’s capital city, Delhi, experienced scorching temperatures reaching a record-breaking 52.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. This extreme heatwave was recorded in the Delhi suburb of Mungeshpur, marking the first time the city has surpassed the 50°C threshold in its history.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the weather station in Mungeshpur recorded the staggering temperature, while Narela, another locality in Delhi, recorded 47.9 degrees Celsius at 2:30 pm. This unprecedented heatwave comes after the northwest Delhi locality recorded 49.9 degrees Celsius the day before.

IMD officials have confirmed that this is the highest-ever maximum temperature recorded in Delhi. Kuldeep Srivastava, the regional head of IMD, explained that the city’s outskirts are the first areas to be hit by hot winds from Rajasthan, exacerbating the already severe weather conditions. Areas like Mungeshpur, Narela, and Najafgarh are particularly vulnerable to these hot winds.

Mahesh Palawat, the vice president of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather, highlighted that open areas with vacant land experience increased radiation, leading to exceptionally high temperatures. He emphasized that when winds blow from the west, these outskirts are affected first, causing temperatures to rise rapidly.

The IMD’s forecast paints a grim picture for the coming days, predicting heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in several states, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Warm night conditions are expected to persist in parts of these states, offering little relief from the intense heat.

Authorities have issued heatwave warnings, urging people to stay indoors during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take extreme care, especially vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases. Delhi authorities have also warned of potential water shortages as the capital grapples with the blistering heat.

Residents in Northwest and Central India can expect some respite from the heatwave as temperatures are forecasted to gradually reduce from May 30. While the severe conditions are expected to ease, isolated areas may still experience heatwave conditions until June 1.
