Florida Governor Honors Five Iconic Floridians with Medal of Freedom

In a heartfelt tribute to the legacies of influential Floridians, Governor Ron DeSantis has posthumously awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom to five remarkable individuals, including the beloved singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett. The announcement, made by DeSantis, highlights the profound impact these figures have had on the state and its culture.

“I’m proud to recognize the legacies of these great Floridians,” DeSantis stated. “Our state is better for their contributions, and we’re proud they called Florida home. They have each earned the honor of being awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom.”

Among the honorees, Buffett, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 76, is celebrated for his iconic hits like “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Beyond his musical achievements, Buffett was a savvy entrepreneur, launching a successful chain of restaurants and resorts under the “Margaritaville” brand, starting with his first store in Key West in 1985. His influence on Florida’s coastal communities remains significant, as noted in the governor’s office release.

Also receiving the prestigious medal were:

  • Lincoln Diaz-Balart: A Cuban-American politician who dedicated his life to advocating against communism. Diaz-Balart, who died earlier this year at 70, served in both the Florida House and Senate before representing Florida in the U.S. House.

  • Bob Graham: The former Democratic governor and U.S. senator, who passed away last year at 87, was known for his commitment to education, environmental conservation, and national security during his extensive political career.

  • Buddy MacKay: The last Democratic governor of Florida, MacKay, who died at 91, had a distinguished career that included serving in both chambers of the state legislature and as the U.S. Special Envoy for the Americas under President Clinton.

  • John Thrasher: A prominent Republican figure who served as Florida House Speaker and later as president of Florida State University. Thrasher, who passed away earlier this year at 81, was also a Vietnam War veteran.

This ceremony not only honors the individual achievements of these five Floridians but also serves as a reminder of the diverse contributions that have shaped Florida’s identity. As the state continues to grow and evolve, the legacies of these leaders will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
