Goodifferent: A Salon Where Black Women Connect Beyond Hair

Funmi Fetto Launches Goodifferent: A Revolutionary Hair Salon Experience in London

Funmi Fetto Launches Goodifferent: A New Era for Black Hair Salons in London

LONDON — From washing her hair with fabric conditioner at the tender age of five to launching her own hair salon, Funmi Fetto’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. This fall, the writer and editor is set to unveil Goodifferent, a hair salon that promises to redefine the Black hair salon experience in central London.

Nestled on the second floor of the iconic Liberty department store, Goodifferent is not your typical salon. Fetto envisions it as a member’s club, meticulously curated with art, music, and literature that reflects the diverse experiences of Black women. “We do hair, but we’re not a hair brand,” Fetto explains. “I want the salon to feel like a living space, inspired by the homes of Black immigrants who started their businesses in their living rooms.”

Fetto’s mission is clear: to democratize the Black hair salon experience, which has often been relegated to suburban areas. “Black women spend a huge amount of money on hair and beauty, yet the industry isn’t really serving them,” she says. “I can’t pop into a mainstream central London salon because they don’t cater to my hair type.”

The salon’s design, crafted by Black Sheep Interiors, features five salon chairs surrounded by vintage furnishings and eclectic artwork from predominantly female artists. The artwork will rotate regularly, spotlighting different galleries and adding to the salon’s vibrant atmosphere.

Fetto has enlisted a team of industry experts to bring her vision to life, including Marie Suter, the former chief creative officer at Glossier, who is helping shape Goodifferent’s visual identity. “There’s an element of luxe, but it’s irreverent and fun,” Fetto notes, highlighting her desire to create a space that feels both high-end and welcoming.

With ambitions to expand Goodifferent internationally, Fetto aims to open more salons in cities like Johannesburg, Lagos, and even the U.S. “Women are the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs, yet they are the least funded,” she emphasizes. “I want to help change that.”

The salon will also feature a retail component, offering popular hair care brands alongside Goodifferent’s own product line, set to launch in 2026. Fetto is committed to making quality hair care accessible, with prices starting at £125 for services like silk presses and braids.

As she prepares for the grand opening, Fetto reflects on the significance of Goodifferent. “It’s about changing the language around Black hair and empowering Black women to show up in the world,” she asserts. With her passion and vision, Funmi Fetto is poised to make a lasting impact on the beauty industry.
