Pritzker Criticizes Trump and Abbott Amid Texas Democrats’ Exodus Over Redistricting Controversy
Pritzker Slams Trump and Abbott Amid Texas Democrats’ Exodus
In a fiery interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker did not hold back, labeling former President Donald Trump a “cheater” and Texas Governor Greg Abbott a “joke.” His comments come just days after he welcomed Texas Democrats who fled their state to protest GOP-led redistricting efforts.
Pritzker’s remarks were a direct response to Abbott’s criticism of Illinois’ congressional map, which the Texas governor had dismissed as a “joke.” “Governor Abbott is the joke,” Pritzker retorted, accusing him of undermining democracy while “licking the boots” of Trump. He emphasized that Abbott’s attempts to redraw district lines mid-decade were detrimental to fair representation.
The Illinois governor defended his state’s congressional map against allegations of gerrymandering, pointing out that Trump won 44% of the statewide vote in 2024, yet Republicans hold only three of the state’s 17 House districts. “We held public hearings, legislative hearings. People attended them. They spoke out,” Pritzker explained, asserting that the map was created through a transparent process following the decennial census.
Pritzker’s comments come amid a tense standoff in Texas, where Democratic legislators have been hiding out in Illinois to deny Republicans a quorum in the state House. This strategic move has thwarted GOP efforts to push through controversial legislative plans, including a proposal to redraw congressional district lines that could secure up to five additional Republican seats.
Abbott has threatened to call special sessions repeatedly until the Democrats return, stating, “That means they’re not going to come back until like 2027 or 2028.” Meanwhile, Trump has voiced his support for Abbott’s redistricting efforts, claiming, “We have an opportunity in Texas to pick up five seats.”
The political drama has drawn national attention, with former Attorney General Eric Holder also weighing in on the redistricting debate. He emphasized the need for Democrats to respond to Texas’ actions, framing it as a temporary measure to protect democracy rather than a permanent solution.
As tensions rise, Pritzker also addressed reports that the FBI had been requested to track down the fleeing Texas legislators, dismissing it as “grandstanding.” He asserted, “There’s no federal law that would allow the FBI to arrest anybody that’s here visiting our state.”
In a broader context, Pritzker touched on international issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, advocating for the delivery of food assistance to innocent Palestinians.
As the political landscape continues to shift, Pritzker’s bold statements underscore the growing divide between Democratic and Republican leaders, particularly in the context of redistricting and the fight for fair representation.
