In a groundbreaking achievement for India’s semiconductor industry, a telecom system powered by locally manufactured chips has successfully obtained certification from the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC). This milestone, announced by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on social media platform X, marks a significant leap forward in India’s ambition to become self-reliant in technology.
“This is a big leap for India’s semiconductor story,” Vaishnaw stated, emphasizing that this is the first instance of a telecom system utilizing Indian-made chips passing rigorous quality and performance standards. The TEC certification, issued by the Department of Telecommunications, validates that the product meets stringent benchmarks essential for operational excellence.
This development aligns with the government’s Make in India initiative, showcasing the nation’s growing capabilities in semiconductor design and fabrication. It positions India as an emerging player in the global telecom and electronics landscape, reinforcing the country’s commitment to technological self-sufficiency.
At the recent Semicon India 2025 event, Vaishnaw highlighted the Vikram 32-bit processor, developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory, as a key innovation. This microprocessor, engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of launch vehicles, represents India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit chip.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2025 on September 2 in New Delhi, marking the largest edition of the event yet, with over 350 exhibiting companies from 33 countries. The event underscores India’s ambition to become a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.
Since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021, the country has made remarkable strides in its semiconductor journey. The government has committed nearly ₹65,000 crore of the ₹76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to support this vision, demonstrating a robust commitment to fostering a thriving semiconductor ecosystem.
As India continues to advance its technological capabilities, this achievement not only enhances national pride but also sets the stage for future innovations in the telecom sector. The successful certification of this indigenous telecom system is a testament to the potential of Indian ingenuity in the global technology arena.
