Texas Republicans Unveil New Congressional Map Aiming for Midterm Gains

By Adam Edelman and Ben Kamisar

In a strategic move that could reshape the political landscape, Texas Republicans unveiled a proposed congressional map on Wednesday that could potentially secure five additional seats for the GOP in the upcoming midterm elections. This proposal comes on the heels of President Donald Trump’s vocal support for a redistricting effort aimed at bolstering Republican representation in the Lone Star State.

The new map strategically redraws district lines to target vulnerable Democratic incumbents in urban areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Houston, as well as two Democrats in South Texas who represent districts that Trump won in the last election. Currently, Republicans hold a slim three-seat majority in the House, and this new map could provide crucial support as they aim to maintain control during the final two years of Trump’s presidency.

Analysis indicates that under the proposed map, Trump would have carried 30 out of 38 congressional seats in Texas last year, with none won by narrow margins. Conversely, Democratic voters are concentrated in eight districts that former Vice President Kamala Harris would have won by at least 15 percentage points, according to the Texas Legislative Council.

While the proposal is still subject to change as state lawmakers deliberate, it signals a calculated effort by Texas Republicans to maximize their electoral advantage. The special redistricting committee may consider additional proposals during the ongoing special session.

Environmental Deregulation Amidst Record Heat

Analysis by Andrea Mitchell

As the nation grapples with a scorching summer heat wave affecting over 100 million Americans, the Trump administration is moving forward with plans to roll back long-standing regulations on fossil fuels. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin has pledged to dismantle what he describes as “the holy grail of the climate change religion,” raising concerns among environmental advocates.

Zeldin argues that the Obama-era regulations, which aimed to limit emissions from power plants and vehicles, overlooked the economic benefits of carbon dioxide. However, scientists warn that the U.S. is on the brink of surpassing critical climate thresholds, with last year recorded as the hottest on record, leading to devastating wildfires and severe flooding.

Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, emphasizes that environmental protection has historically been a bipartisan effort, dating back to the establishment of the EPA under President Nixon. Yet, with the U.S. withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accords and appointing officials who reject established climate science, global leadership on climate initiatives is shifting to China and the European Union.

As the Trump administration continues to prioritize deregulation, the implications for both the environment and public health remain a pressing concern, especially as climate-related disasters have already cost the U.S. billions this year.
