Deadly Crane Collapse in Everett Claims Two Lives
EVERETT, Mass. — A tragic crane collapse in Everett, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon has left two young men dead, prompting an urgent investigation by local authorities. The incident occurred near Rover Street, close to the now-defunct power plant on Island End, as crews were working on a barge in the Mystic River to dismantle the former Exxon site.
Everett Fire Chief John Hickey confirmed in a press conference that one individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identities of the victims have not been released, but officials have stated that both were young men.
Sky5 footage captured the scene, showing the red crane lying horizontally across the dock, surrounded by multiple police and fire vehicles. The crane, measuring approximately four to five stories tall, was involved in the dismantling operation when the collapse occurred. Chief Hickey noted that there are currently no reports of additional injuries or missing persons from the work site.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, with officials working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Bob Delhome, founder and president of Charter Contracting, expressed his condolences in a statement:
“We are devastated to learn that two individuals from a subcontractor have died following a horrific accident at one of our job sites. We are actively coordinating with all relevant public safety officials to understand why and how this happened. We’re grateful for the quick response from the police and EMS, and extend our deepest sympathies to anyone affected by this tragedy.”
As the investigation unfolds, the area of the collapse is also under scrutiny due to plans for a new soccer stadium for the New England Revolution, raising questions about safety protocols in construction zones.
