Kai Havertz Undergoes Knee Surgery: Recovery Expected to Be Brief
Kai Havertz Undergoes Knee Surgery, Arsenal Optimistic About Quick Recovery
Arsenal’s summer signing Kai Havertz has successfully undergone knee surgery, with the club expressing optimism that his recovery will be swift. The procedure, described as minor, follows a series of tests that manager Mikel Arteta indicated were necessary to assess Havertz’s condition.
Arteta, speaking on August 22, acknowledged the need for further evaluation, stating, “Mentally, he’s in a good space. He’s really a strong boy, very committed.” The manager emphasized Havertz’s resilience, recalling the player’s impressive recovery from a hamstring surgery last season. “He never had an injury before, so it was his first experience really. Now, he’s got a setback. Let’s see how bad it is, but I’m sure he’s going to react in the best way possible.”
Havertz’s injury comes after a challenging season where he was sidelined for several months due to a hamstring issue sustained during a training camp in Dubai. Despite this setback, he had a strong debut season at Arsenal, featuring in 37 of 38 league games after his transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2023.
With Havertz out, Arsenal faces a tactical challenge. Viktor Gyokeres, another summer signing, is now the only recognized No. 9 available to Arteta, as Gabriel Jesus continues to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. Last season, with both Havertz and Jesus unavailable, midfielder Mikel Merino and winger Leandro Trossard stepped in as makeshift forwards.
In light of Havertz’s injury, Arsenal has been active in the transfer market, recently securing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace for an initial £60 million, with potential add-ons of £7.5 million.

Gyokeres has already made an impact, scoring twice against Leeds United, leaving Arteta to ponder how best to support his new striker in Havertz’s absence. Trossard, known for his ability to link play, could step in, but his style differs significantly from that of Gyokeres and Havertz.
Merino, who proved effective as a makeshift center-forward last season, could also be an option. He scored six of his nine goals while filling in during Havertz’s previous injury.
Adding to Arsenal’s hopes, Gabriel Jesus has begun ball work on the pitch, sharing a video of his progress with the caption: “It’s been seven months of pain, uncertainty, and anxiety. Today, I finally feel light — like a child playing football again. God is great.”
While Arsenal will need to be cautious in reintegrating Jesus, his return could provide a significant boost to the squad, especially given his impressive form prior to his injury.
As the Gunners navigate this challenging period, the focus remains on maintaining momentum and ensuring a strong start to the season.
