Southern Tier Voters Prepare for Crucial Election Day on November 4

As the sun rises on November 4, voters across the Southern Tier will head to the polls to cast their ballots in a series of pivotal local races. With key positions such as the City of Binghamton mayor and Broome County clerk on the line, this election promises to shape the future of the region.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., giving residents ample time to make their voices heard. For those unsure of where to vote, Broome County offers over 100 polling locations. Voters in Broome, Tioga, Chenango, and Delaware counties can also utilize the New York State Board of Elections lookup tool to find their designated polling place.

Key Races to Watch

This year’s ballot features a mix of familiar faces and new challengers. In Binghamton, current Mayor Jared Kraham, a Republican, faces off against Democratic challenger Miles Burnett. Meanwhile, the race for Broome County clerk has garnered attention, as incumbent Joe Mihalko steps down after eight years. Democrat Nick Libous and Republican Aaron Martin are vying for this important position.

In Johnson City, incumbent Mayor Martin Meaney, a Republican, is challenged by Democrat Christina Charuk. Vestal residents will also be engaged in local governance, electing two town board members from a competitive field that includes incumbents and newcomers alike.

Special Election and Propositions

In addition to local offices, voters will also participate in a special election for Binghamton City Council’s District 1 seat, following the resignation of Olamni Porter. Democrat Carla Murray, who was appointed to the seat, will face Republican Kevin Micha.

On a broader scale, all Southern Tier voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on a New York State Ballot Proposition concerning an Olympic Sports Complex in Essex County. This proposition would allow for the development of skiing and related facilities on state forest preserve land, contingent upon the addition of 2,500 acres of new forest land in the Adirondack Park.

A “YES” vote would authorize the new ski trails, while a “NO” vote would reject the proposal.

Early Voting Recap

For those who missed early voting, which ran from October 25 to November 2, the Election Day offers a final chance to participate. Early voting locations included the Vestal Public Library, Broome County Public Library, George F. Johnson Memorial Library, and the Taste NY Building in the Town of Dickinson.
