Featured Lawsuit Against Sons of Roberto Clemente for Biopic Rights Fraud

The sons of baseball legend Roberto Clemente are facing a lawsuit for allegedly defrauding an indie production company by selling the rights to a biopic of their father, despite Legendary Pictures already having optioned the film. Inside the Park, the production banner, developed the movie for over two years only to discover that the project was meant to generate interest in another endeavor.

Luis R. Clemente and Roberto Clemente Jr. struck a deal with Inside the Park in January 2023 for the rights to create a feature based on their father’s life and biography. However, it was later revealed that there were issues with the rights granted under the deal, with the family allegedly conspiring to conceal information about Teton Ridge potentially owning the movie rights.

The lawsuit claims that the Clemente family wanted out of the deal with Inside the Park, citing concerns that the company took advantage of them. The deal eventually fell apart, leading to legal action seeking at least $5 million in damages and clarification on the exclusive ownership of the rights.

The complaint includes claims of breach of contract, fraud, specific performance, and declaratory relief. Inside the Park had agreed to pay the Clemente family based on the movie’s budget and studio setup, with additional compensation tiers and a percentage of defined net proceeds.
