In a groundbreaking move set to revolutionize mobile connectivity, Lynk Global and Omnispace have announced plans to merge, creating a comprehensive direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity solution that aims to bridge the gap between satellite and terrestrial networks. The merger, which is expected to close by late 2023 or early 2024, will position the combined entity at the forefront of the rapidly evolving telecommunications landscape.
A New Era of Connectivity
The merger will see SES, a global leader in space solutions, become a major strategic shareholder. This partnership is poised to accelerate the deployment of powerful, cost-effective D2D and Internet of Things (IoT) services for mobile network operators (MNOs), enterprises, and government customers. The new entity will leverage Omnispace’s 60 MHz of globally coordinated S-band spectrum, which is optimized for D2D services and compliant with international telecommunications standards.
With a reach extending to over 1 billion people across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, the merger promises to enhance global deployment and scalable service delivery. Lynk’s patented multi-spectrum satellite technology will further enable backward-compatible mobile voice and messaging services to more than 7 billion smartphones and IoT devices.
Leadership Vision
“This merger will enable us to accelerate our efforts in delivering seamless, reliable messaging, voice, and data services,” said Ramu Potarazu, CEO of Lynk. He emphasized the importance of extending mobile connectivity to areas where it is needed most, including consumer, commercial, and government sectors.
Ram Viswanathan, President and CEO of Omnispace, echoed this sentiment, stating, “By combining Omnispace’s spectrum portfolio with Lynk’s innovative technology, we’re creating a powerful platform for scalable, cost-effective global D2D.” This merger not only unlocks the full potential of their global S-band spectrum assets but also positions them to meet the immediate connectivity needs of customers while enhancing capacity over time.
SES: A Strategic Partner
SES, already an investor in both companies, will deepen its partnership following the merger. The company will provide access to its multi-orbit network and globally deployed ground infrastructure, supporting the engineering, operations, and regulatory needs of the new entity. Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES, highlighted the enormous opportunities in D2D and IoT connectivity, stating that the merger aligns with SES’s strategy to diversify into this high-growth segment.
