French President Macron to Hold Talks with Political Leaders to Form New Government

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron is set to meet with key political players in an effort to form a new government following surprise legislative elections last month that left no party with a majority in the National Assembly.

Macron’s office announced that meetings with leaders of France’s main political parties will take place on Friday and Monday at the Elysee presidential palace with the goal of establishing the broadest and most stable majority possible.

The New Popular Front, a leftist coalition, emerged as the largest group in the National Assembly, winning about one-third of the seats. They have put forward civil servant Lucie Castets as their choice for prime minister.

However, Macron has indicated that the selection of the prime minister will not be solely based on the largest group, emphasizing the need for a parliamentary majority behind the candidate to ensure stability and prevent a potential no-confidence vote.

Centrists, conservatives, and far-right National Rally leaders will also participate in the talks, with Macron aiming to form a coalition that spans from the center-left to the traditional right.

Potential candidates for the prime minister position include center-left politician Bernard Cazeneuve, former minister Xavier Bertrand, and conservative Michel Barnier, who is the EU’s chief negotiator for post-Brexit talks.

There is no set timeline for Macron to name a new prime minister, as he has the sole authority to do so according to the French Constitution. In the meantime, the outgoing centrist government will remain in a caretaker role to handle current affairs.

The unprecedented situation of a hung parliament in France has sparked political uncertainty, with various parties vying for influence in the formation of a new government. Macron’s ability to navigate these negotiations and establish a stable administration will be closely watched in the coming days.
