NFL Preseason Heats Up: Key Storylines as Bengals Face Commanders

As the second week of NFL preseason action wraps up tonight, all eyes will be on the clash between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Washington Commanders in a highly anticipated matchup on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. However, the spotlight may not shine on the players taking the field, but rather on two of the league’s most notable holdouts: Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson and Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

Contract Standoffs Take Center Stage

Hendrickson, the reigning sack king, reported to training camp on July 30 but has been holding in, seeking a lucrative contract extension. The Bengals have reportedly been listening to trade offers for the 30-year-old defensive star, with an asking price that includes a young defensive player and a 2026 first-round pick. The crux of the disagreement appears to be the guarantee structure of his contract, as Cincinnati is hesitant to extend guarantees beyond the first year, despite offering an average annual value exceeding $30 million.

On the other side, McLaurin, who reported to camp on July 27, is also in search of a contract extension. According to Yahoo Sports Senior NFL Reporter Charles Robinson, the two sides are far apart in their valuation, but he believes a compromise could be reached if the annual average value hovers between $27 million and $28 million, with guaranteed money in the $50 to $60 million range.

As both players remain sidelined, fans are left wondering: Will Hendrickson or McLaurin sign first? Or could either—or both—be traded before the regular season kicks off?

Other Noteworthy Developments

While the focus on the Bengals-Commanders game is undeniable, several other storylines are emerging from around the league:

  • Browns Sign Isaiah Bond: The Cleveland Browns have signed wide receiver Isaiah Bond to a three-year, $3 million deal following a grand jury’s decision not to charge him in a sexual assault investigation. The team reportedly conducted a polygraph test as part of their due diligence.

  • Caleb Williams Shines for Bears: In a promising start for the Chicago Bears, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams showcased his skills, completing 5 of 6 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown on his first drive against the Buffalo Bills. This performance has fans optimistic about the Bears’ offensive prospects under new head coach Ben Johnson.

  • Browns to Name Starting QB: Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski is set to announce the starting quarterback for Week 1 this week. Joe Flacco is currently the frontrunner, but rookie Dillon Gabriel has made a strong case for himself during the preseason.

  • Mixed Results for Saints QBs: In New Orleans, Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler had their ups and downs in a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shough’s performance was steady but not spectacular, while Rattler threw for 199 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, leaving the starting job still up for grabs.

Looking Ahead

As the NFL preseason continues, the drama surrounding contract negotiations and player performances will undoubtedly keep fans on the edge of their seats. With the Bengals and Commanders set to face off tonight, the biggest storylines may very well revolve around the players who won’t be on the field.
