As New York City gears up for its mayoral election on Tuesday, candidate Zohran Mamdani, a rising star in the Democratic Party, has reportedly received a significant boost from former President Barack Obama. In a call on Saturday, Obama offered to serve as a “sounding board” for Mamdani, should he secure victory in the highly anticipated race.
The conversation, first reported by the New York Times and later confirmed by Mamdani’s spokesperson, highlighted Obama’s praise for the campaign Mamdani has run against his main rivals: former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, now running as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. “Zohran Mamdani appreciated President Obama’s words of support and their conversation on the importance of bringing a new kind of politics to our city,” said spokesperson Dora Pekec.
Mamdani, who made headlines with a surprising victory in the Democratic primary in June, has consistently polled ahead of Cuomo and Sliwa leading up to the general election. The Uganda-born state assembly member has garnered endorsements from prominent figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and current New York Governor Kathy Hochul, alongside a wave of financial backing from small donors.
His platform, which includes proposals to increase taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents, raise corporate taxes, freeze stabilized apartment rental rates, and expand publicly subsidized housing, has sparked both enthusiasm and concern. While many young voters are drawn to his democratic socialist ideals, some in the finance community worry that his policies could undermine the city’s competitiveness.
Cuomo, who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations, is attempting a political comeback as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Meanwhile, Sliwa, known for founding the Guardian Angels, is positioning himself as a tough-on-crime candidate.
As the election draws near, Mamdani has been actively campaigning, making appearances at bars and nightclubs to rally support. In a spirited moment captured on video, he energized a crowd from behind a DJ booth, declaring, “Are we ready to beat Andrew Cuomo?” The cheers that followed underscored the enthusiasm surrounding his candidacy.
Obama, meanwhile, has been busy rallying support for other Democratic candidates, including New Jersey gubernatorial hopeful Mikie Sherrill and Virginia’s Abigail Spanberger, both of whom are facing tough races.
With early voting concluding on Sunday, all eyes will be on Mamdani as he seeks to make history in a city that has long been a political battleground.
