Pa. Democrats Generate Excitement in Effort to Reclaim US House

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti Launches Congressional Bid in Competitive Pennsylvania Race

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti Launches Congressional Bid, Energizing Pennsylvania Democrats for 2026 Midterms

Scranton, PA — In a significant move for Pennsylvania’s political landscape, Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti announced her candidacy for Congress on Tuesday, positioning herself as a formidable contender in the 2026 midterm elections. Her entry adds to a growing roster of competitive Democratic candidates in a state that presents a prime opportunity for the party to gain multiple congressional seats.

Cognetti, who has become a familiar face on the national Democratic stage, is seen as a key player in the effort to unseat freshman Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan. The district, which has a history of supporting Democratic candidates, is now home to many voters who previously backed President Donald Trump, making it a battleground for the upcoming elections.

“People here are sick of self-serving politicians,” Cognetti stated in a recent interview. “I’ve shown in Scranton that we can build government for people and be honest with people. I have done it with an independent streak, and I think we will be able to take that successfully to the whole district.”

As the Democratic Party aims to flip control of the U.S. House, Cognetti’s candidacy is seen as a beacon of hope. With just three seats needed for a majority, Pennsylvania is a focal point for Democratic leaders, who recognize the importance of recruiting strong candidates in a state that holds four of the 35 targeted seats nationwide.

Redistricting Challenges

Unlike previous election cycles, redistricting is not an option for Pennsylvania Democrats, as any legislative changes face significant hurdles in the state’s divided legislature. This reality underscores the importance of candidate recruitment, a task that involves collaboration with Governor Josh Shapiro, who is also eyeing a potential presidential run in 2028.

Cognetti, 45, brings a wealth of experience to her campaign, having served in the U.S. Treasury Department and on the Scranton school board. Her tenure as mayor has solidified her reputation as a corruption-fighting leader, making her a sought-after figure at political events, including those featuring President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

A Rising Star in a Competitive Field

Despite the challenges ahead, Cognetti is viewed as a rising star within the Democratic Party. The district she aims to represent has leaned Republican in recent elections, with Trump securing victories in the last three presidential races. However, her candidacy has generated excitement among party operatives, who see her as a strong candidate to reclaim the seat previously held by Matt Cartwright.

Brittany Crampsie, a Democratic campaign strategist, expressed optimism about the recruitment efforts, stating, “Top down, going into next year, I have been blown away by recruitment. People want to run in seats where we had to do strong-arming to get candidates to say ‘yes’ last year, three years ago.”

Cognetti’s announcement follows another significant development for Pennsylvania Democrats: Bob Brooks, head of the state firefighters’ union, declared his candidacy to challenge Rep. Ryan Mackenzie. With five Democrats already in the race, Brooks is leveraging his working-class roots and union support to appeal to voters.

Looking Ahead

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the stakes are high for both parties. With a changing political landscape and a growing enthusiasm among Democratic candidates, Pennsylvania is poised to be a key battleground. Cognetti’s candidacy not only reflects her commitment to serving her constituents but also symbolizes the broader aspirations of the Democratic Party as it seeks to regain control of the U.S. House.

With the momentum building, all eyes will be on Pennsylvania as candidates gear up for what promises to be a fiercely competitive election cycle.
