MUIRHEAD Unveils Neurodiverse-Friendly Aircraft Seat Covers at Aviation Trade Event

Scottish Leather Group’s aviation division, Muirhead, is set to showcase its groundbreaking Sensation collection of aircraft seat covers designed specifically for neurodivergent passengers at a major aviation trade event in Hamburg. The collection, featuring natural materials in soothing colors and special signage and patterns, aims to provide a more inclusive and positive travel experience for individuals with neurological or developmental disorders.

The innovative approach taken by Muirhead in creating these seat covers is expected to inspire designers specializing in aviation interiors as they envision the future of aircraft cabins. The collection, designed to address common barriers to travel for neurodivergent passengers, is the result of collaboration with Scottish disability consultancy Visible Inclusive Accessibility (VIA) and direct input from neurodivergent individuals who have faced challenges while traveling.

Jamie O’Donnell, Designer at Muirhead, emphasized the importance of providing comfort and a sense of security to neurodivergent travelers through thoughtful design. The new collection features a calming color palette and advanced digital printing capabilities to aid passengers in locating their seats and processing their environment. Additionally, bespoke leather embosses add a tactile element to enhance the sensory experience for travelers.

Stephanie Wilson, founder of Visible Inclusive Accessibility, praised the project for its commitment to inclusive and accessible design, noting the significant impact it can have on improving travel experiences for individuals with disabilities. With an estimated 1 in 5 individuals in Scotland living with a disability, the need for thoughtful accommodations and considerations for non-visible disabilities is crucial in creating a more welcoming and inclusive travel environment.
