In a dramatic start to the trial of Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump, courtroom proceedings took an unexpected twist on Thursday. Routh, who is representing himself, was cut short during his opening statement after he strayed off-topic, discussing Adolf Hitler and the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, presiding over the case, intervened after Routh’s remarks veered into unrelated territory. Despite being given 40 minutes to present his case, Routh’s initial statement lasted only 10 minutes before the judge warned him to stay focused. After a second warning, Judge Cannon declared that Routh had forfeited his right to continue, stating, “I gave you one more chance and you continued to read what has no relevance for this case.”
The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Shipley, painted a stark picture of Routh’s intentions, asserting that he had meticulously plotted to ensure Trump would not be re-elected. “This plot was carefully crafted and deadly serious,” Shipley told the jury.
Routh, 59, has pleaded not guilty to charges including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer. He was previously seen in court shackled and dressed in a tan jail jumpsuit, but appeared unrestrained and in a sport coat and tie for the jury. Judge Cannon has allowed him to address jurors from a podium but has restricted his movement within the courtroom.
The trial comes nearly a year after Routh allegedly aimed a rifle at Trump while the former president played golf at his West Palm Beach country club on September 15, 2024. A Secret Service agent thwarted the attempt, spotting Routh before Trump came into view. Routh reportedly aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, forcing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot.
This incident follows another assassination attempt on Trump just weeks earlier, where a gunman fired eight shots, narrowly missing the former president.
Routh, a North Carolina native and self-styled mercenary leader, has a history of violent behavior and has previously attempted to recruit soldiers for conflicts around the world. His past includes a 2002 arrest for eluding police while armed with a fully automatic machine gun and explosives.
As the trial unfolds, it is expected to last two to three weeks, drawing attention not only for its high-profile defendant but also for the broader implications surrounding political violence in the current climate. The jury, sworn in on Wednesday, consists of a diverse panel of 12 jurors and four alternates, selected from a pool of 180 potential jurors.
