The Outcome of the Texas Runoff Elections: A Recap

Establishment Candidates Prevail in Texas Runoff Elections

In a dramatic series of runoff elections in Texas on Tuesday, establishment candidates emerged victorious in key races, while the speaker of the State House narrowly survived a challenge from a Trump-backed Republican.

In U.S. House District 23, Representative Tony Gonzales, a Republican who has clashed with far-right members of his party, barely held onto his seat against a challenge from Brandon Herrera, a gun rights activist. Despite Herrera’s surge in support during the runoff, Gonzales managed to secure victory by a slim margin of roughly 400 votes. Gonzales, who has taken positions contrary to the party line on issues like gun control and immigration, faced a tough battle in the more solidly Republican district following redistricting.

Meanwhile, in U.S. House District 28, Jay Furman, a retired Navy officer, emerged victorious in the Republican primary and will now challenge Representative Henry Cuellar, a centrist Democrat who is facing bribery charges. Both candidates in this race made immigration a central issue, echoing former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric.

In a separate race, the speaker of the Texas House, Dade Phelan, narrowly defeated his Trump-backed opponent, David Covey, in the Republican primary. Phelan’s victory by fewer than 400 votes came after a heated campaign that saw significant support from wealthy donors and endorsements from Trump. The opposition to Phelan was largely driven by state attorney general Ken Paxton, seeking revenge for his impeachment by the Texas House on corruption charges.

Overall, the runoff elections in Texas showcased the ongoing power struggles within the Republican Party, with establishment candidates managing to hold onto their positions despite strong challenges from insurgent candidates backed by prominent figures like Trump and Gaetz.
