Tributes to Isle of Man political giant Eddie Lowey

The Isle of Man is mourning the loss of a political giant, Eddie Lowey, who passed away at the age of 86. Lowey served in the Manx parliament for an impressive 38 years before retiring in 2013.

Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson praised Lowey’s “extraordinary career in Tynwald” and noted his wise counsel to fellow members. The President of Tynwald also highlighted Lowey’s high level of respect among his colleagues throughout his political career.

Lowey was first elected to the House of Keys in 1975 and later moved to the Legislative Council in 1982. He held various senior positions within the government, including serving as minister for the Home Affairs and Industry departments.

Tributes poured in from all corners, including the Manx Labour Party, which Lowey represented during his career. Current chairman Sarah Maltby MHK described him as a strong character who fought tirelessly for the party’s values.

Beyond politics, Lowey was a dedicated supporter of the Malew Football Club, where he held multiple roles. The club paid tribute to his unmatched generosity and described him as irreplaceable due to his knowledge, kindness, and character.

Eddie Lowey leaves behind a lasting legacy in Isle of Man politics and the local community. His impact will be felt for years to come.
