Why America Boasts the World’s Oldest Politicians

The Age Divide: Understanding America’s Gerontocracy in Politics

America’s Aging Politicians: A Gerontocracy in Action

In a political landscape where youth often symbolizes innovation and change, the United States stands out for a different reason: its aging political class. A recent report from Protect Democracy and New America reveals that nearly 40% of American representatives are over the age of 60, making the U.S. the world’s leading gerontocracy among democracies. This statistic is striking, especially when compared to other OECD countries, where the average age of politicians is significantly lower.

The Age Divide

The report, titled The Age Divide: How America’s Electoral System Reinforces the Gerontocracy and Inhibits Young People’s Full Participation in Democracy, sheds light on the systemic issues that contribute to this phenomenon. The authors, Oscar Pocasangre and Dustin Wahl, argue that the electoral system itself is a primary culprit. Unlike countries with proportional representation, which tend to have higher youth representation, the U.S. winner-take-all system creates barriers for younger candidates.

In the U.S., the primary election process favors incumbents, making it exceedingly difficult for new, younger candidates to break through. With over 90% of congressional districts considered “safe” for one party, incumbents often remain in power for extended periods, effectively sidelining younger voices.

Hurdles for Younger Candidates

Imagine a young candidate eager to run for the House of Representatives. In a safe district, the odds are stacked against them. Incumbents, who have established networks and name recognition, dominate the landscape. Even when a seat opens up, the challenges remain formidable. Primary voters tend to skew older, and fundraising often favors established candidates, further entrenching the status quo.

In competitive districts, while there may be more opportunities for challengers, the definition of “electable” often leans toward middle-aged candidates, particularly white males. This perception reinforces a cycle where youth is seen as a liability rather than an asset.

The Case for Change

The report raises critical questions about the future of American democracy. With a significant portion of young voters feeling disillusioned and detached from the political process, the implications are concerning. Polls indicate that many young Americans believe politicians are corrupt and feel that their votes do not lead to meaningful change.

Could term limits or age limits be the answer? While some argue for experience in Congress, others suggest that imposing age limits could open the door for younger leaders. However, these solutions may not address the root of the problem.

A Possible Solution: Proportional Representation

The authors propose a shift to proportional representation as a potential remedy. This system allows parties to present diverse candidate slates, enabling younger candidates to compete more effectively. In such a framework, all votes contribute to a party’s overall success, making demographic diversity a strategic advantage rather than a risk.

Moreover, proportional representation could eliminate the need for public primaries, which often dilute candidate diversity. By allowing party leaders to select candidates, a more balanced representation could emerge, fostering an environment where younger voices are heard.

Why This Matters

The stakes are high. As young voters increasingly feel alienated from the political process, the risk of a generational legitimacy crisis looms. With a growing number of young Americans expressing frustration and disillusionment, the need for systemic change becomes more urgent.

In a democracy that prides itself on representation, the exclusion of entire generations from meaningful participation is a troubling trend. As the U.S. grapples with its aging political class, the question remains: how can we ensure that the voices of younger generations are not just heard, but actively represented in shaping the future of the nation?
