Zohran Mamdani Maintains That Trump is a ‘Fascist’ and ‘Despot’ Following White House Meeting

New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani Maintains Stance on Trump as “Fascist” While Seeking Collaborative Solutions for Affordability Crisis

New York Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani Meets Trump: A Surprising Shift Towards Collaboration

In a remarkable turn of events, New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, marking a significant moment in their contentious relationship. Despite previously labeling Trump a “fascist” and a “despot” during his campaign, Mamdani described the meeting as an “opportunity” to address the pressing affordability crisis facing New Yorkers.

The atmosphere during their first face-to-face encounter was unexpectedly cordial, with Trump expressing his support for Mamdani’s leadership. “I’ll be cheering for you,” the president told reporters, while Mamdani characterized the discussion as “productive.”

When pressed about his past comments, Mamdani reaffirmed his stance on Trump’s leadership. “Yes, I still believe he is a fascist,” he stated during an appearance on “Meet the Press.” However, he emphasized the importance of focusing on shared goals, particularly the rising cost of living in New York City. “We were not shy about our disagreements, but we also wanted to focus on what it could look like to deliver on a shared analysis of an affordability crisis for New Yorkers,” he explained.

Mamdani’s approach reflects a pragmatic strategy to prioritize the needs of his constituents over political animosity. “I’m not coming into the Oval Office to make a point or make a stand. I’m coming in there to deliver for New Yorkers,” he asserted.

The mayor-elect also highlighted the significance of understanding the concerns of all New Yorkers, including those who supported Trump in the last election. “When I asked those New Yorkers why they voted for the president, they told me again and again, it was cost of living,” Mamdani shared, indicating a willingness to bridge divides for the sake of progress.

Despite their friendly exchange, the backdrop of their meeting was fraught with tension. In the lead-up to the election, Trump had publicly criticized Mamdani, labeling him a “communist lunatic” and threatening to cut federal funding to New York City if he won. Yet, in a surprising twist, both leaders seemed to set aside their differences to discuss potential solutions for the city’s economic challenges.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett commented on the meeting, suggesting that while specific policies were not yet clear, there is potential for collaboration. “If Mamdani cares as much as he appears to for the people of New York, and President Trump obviously does, there’s a lot of positive work that can be done together,” he noted.

Mamdani also addressed Trump’s past threats to deploy National Guard troops in Democratic-led cities, asserting his confidence in the NYPD to maintain public safety. “What separates New York City from anywhere else in the country is we have the NYPD, and I trust the NYPD to deliver public safety,” he stated.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, he faces the challenge of raising taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents to fund key initiatives. While he did not confirm whether Governor Kathy Hochul would support these efforts, he expressed optimism about their shared commitment to making New York City more affordable.

In a political landscape marked by division, Mamdani’s willingness to engage with Trump signals a potential shift towards collaboration, focusing on the urgent needs of New Yorkers. As both leaders navigate their complex relationship, the city watches closely, hopeful for tangible outcomes that address the affordability crisis.
