London – Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has launched a fierce critique of his ex-colleague Angela Rayner, accusing her of jeopardizing vital community allotments by approving the sale of eight plots since the last general election. The allotments, cherished by many for their role in promoting self-sufficiency and community spirit, are now under threat as developers eye these green spaces for new housing projects.

In a passionate letter published in the Telegraph, Corbyn, an avid gardener and allotment enthusiast, expressed his deep concern over the recent decisions made by Rayner, who serves as the Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government. He described the joy of cultivating his own vegetables, particularly marrows, and warned that such sales could make the future of these “precious spaces” even more precarious.

The UK boasts approximately 330,000 allotments, small rented plots where residents can grow their own fruits and vegetables. These spaces are protected from development under the Allotment Act of 1925, but can be sold with ministerial approval. A government spokesperson stated that strict criteria are in place for such sales, which should only occur when deemed “clearly necessary.”

Corbyn’s letter delves into the historical significance of allotments, tracing their roots back to the Middle Ages when landowners enclosed common land. Currently, around 100,000 individuals are on waiting lists for allotments, some waiting decades for a plot.

Rayner’s approval of the sale of allotments in various counties—including Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and West Sussex—has sparked outrage among community advocates. Developers plan to replace these community spaces with new homes, igniting a debate about the balance between housing needs and preserving green spaces.

“Of course, social housing is desperately needed, but we need not sacrifice these vital green spaces to build it,” Corbyn argued.
