Rangers Coach Russell Martin Urges Players to Embrace Pressure Ahead of Crucial Champions League Qualifier

Rangers head coach Russell Martin has called on his players to abandon a mindset of “self-preservation” as they gear up for a pivotal Champions League qualifier against Czech side Viktoria Plzen. Following a disappointing draw with Motherwell in their Scottish Premiership opener, Martin delivered a passionate post-match address, emphasizing the need for a shift in mentality.

The Ibrox boss expressed frustration over his team’s lack of application and commitment at Fir Park, labeling the issue a “mentality problem.” He believes that the players must fully embrace the demands of playing for Rangers, a club with a rich history and high expectations.

“I think if they know us by now as a group of coaching staff, that it all comes from a place of love, really, and care for them,” Martin explained. “I don’t come out and say that because I want to be ruthless. If they understand that, then we can have honest conversations about it.”

Martin’s comments come as Rangers prepare for a crucial week, having advanced to the third qualifying round of the Champions League after overcoming Panathinaikos. The upcoming match against Viktoria Plzen will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland, adding to the stakes for the players.

The former Rangers defender made it clear that any player who shrinks under pressure may not fit into his vision for the team. “If it has a detrimental effect on certain individuals, then they’re probably not the ones we want to come on the journey with us,” he stated. “I don’t have any worry about it being detrimental on the team.”

As the team looks to bounce back from their recent performance, Martin remains optimistic that his players can rise to the occasion. “They’re really good human beings,” he said. “But we need to shift that default of trying to protect yourself when it gets tough.”

With the Champions League spotlight shining brightly, all eyes will be on Rangers as they seek to demonstrate their resilience and commitment in the face of adversity. The upcoming clash against Viktoria Plzen promises to be a defining moment for both the players and the coaching staff as they strive to embody the spirit of the club.
