Texas Governor Seeks Removal of Rep. Gene Wu Amid Quorum Controversy Over Redistricting Efforts

Texas Governor Files Emergency Petition to Remove State Rep. Gene Wu Amid Quorum Crisis

Austin, TX — In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott filed an emergency petition with the Texas Supreme Court on Tuesday, seeking the removal of state Representative Gene Wu. This move comes after Wu and over 50 other Democratic lawmakers left the state to thwart Republican efforts to redraw congressional district lines, a maneuver that could potentially secure five additional House seats for the GOP.

The lawsuit, spearheaded by Abbott, argues that Wu, who serves as the chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, has violated the state Constitution by abandoning his office. The absence of these Democratic lawmakers has effectively denied Republicans the legislative quorum necessary to advance their redistricting plans.

“Attendance in the state House is an affirmative constitutional obligation,” the lawsuit states, asserting that Wu’s actions amount to a deliberate obstruction of legislative proceedings. “Representative Wu has openly renounced these constitutional mandates by fleeing the State of Texas to break quorum,” it continues, labeling his departure as a “flagrant violation” of his oath of office.

In response, Wu defended his actions, stating, “When a governor conspires with a disgraced president to ram through a racist gerrymandered map, my constitutional duty is to not be a willing participant.” He emphasized that his absence was not an abandonment of duty but rather a stand against what he described as a corrupt agenda. “Denying the governor a quorum was a fulfillment of my oath,” he added.

Wu, who is currently in Illinois, took to social media to express his commitment to fighting for the rights of Texans and all Americans. His statement reflects a broader Democratic strategy to resist what they view as partisan overreach by the Republican majority.

Governor Abbott, however, has taken a hardline stance, asserting that the Democratic lawmakers’ actions constitute a failure to fulfill their responsibilities to the people of Texas. “Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty to Texans, and there must be consequences,” he stated.

The situation escalated further when Abbott ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to arrest the absent lawmakers after the House voted to compel their return “under warrant of arrest, if necessary.” This move has drawn national attention, with President Donald Trump weighing in, suggesting that federal authorities may need to get involved. “You can’t just sit it out. You have to go back. You have to fight it out,” Trump remarked.

As the political standoff continues, the implications for Texas governance and the upcoming elections remain uncertain. The outcome of Abbott’s petition could set a significant precedent in the ongoing battle over legislative power and representation in the Lone Star State.
