Jacksonville State University Revamps Graduate Program to Meet Evolving Sports Industry Demands

Jacksonville, AL – In a bold move to align with the rapidly changing landscape of the sports industry, Jacksonville State University (JSU) has officially rebranded its graduate program in sport management. Formerly known as the Master of Science in Sport Management, the program will now be called the Master of Science in Sports Industry, reflecting a broader and more dynamic approach to careers in sports.

Housed within the College of Health Professions and Wellness, this 30-hour graduate program is designed to equip students with the leadership skills necessary for various roles in athletics. However, the updated curriculum goes beyond traditional management training, incorporating essential skills in communication, marketing, analytics, and economic development. This shift acknowledges the growing importance of areas such as digital media, sports tourism, and revenue generation in today’s sports landscape.

“While management remains a key component of our program, we’re taking a more contemporary approach that goes beyond the administrative and operational side of sports,” said Dr. Allen Gilbert, Associate Professor of Sport Management and Coordinator of the Master of Science: Sports Industry Program. “The new name better reflects our mission to prepare students for all facets of the sports industry—whether that’s working with professional teams, media outlets, athletic departments, or event organizations.”

Students will have the opportunity to tailor their educational experience by choosing from three distinct tracks: a general Master of Science in Sports Industry, or concentrations in either Sport Management or Sport Communication. Each pathway is meticulously designed to provide graduates with the specialized skills needed to excel in the ever-evolving sports sector. Additionally, select courses will be offered in a hybrid format, allowing students the flexibility to attend classes in person or online.

The program has garnered a strong reputation for graduate success, with alumni landing positions in collegiate and professional athletics, media and communications, facility management, and corporate partnerships. Its combination of academic rigor and practical preparation has made it a popular choice for those looking to launch or advance their careers in the sports field.

Core courses include law and ethics, finance, human resource management, and marketing, with the option for students to complete an internship or directed study. Remarkably, students can finish their degree in as little as one year, making it an attractive option for those eager to enter the workforce.

As the sports industry continues to evolve, Jacksonville State University is committed to ensuring its graduates are not just participants but leaders in shaping the future of sports.
