In a landscape marked by economic uncertainty, the beauty industry is showcasing remarkable resilience, according to recent data from Circana. The first half of 2025 saw the U.S. prestige beauty market grow by 2 percent, reaching an impressive $16 billion, while the mass beauty sector surged by 4 percent to $34.6 billion.

Despite a slowdown in growth compared to previous years, Larissa Jensen, global beauty industry adviser at Circana, emphasizes that this is not indicative of consumers trading down. “Dollars grew and units grew,” Jensen noted, highlighting that positive unit performance is a strong indicator of demand in the prestige market.

The beauty sector stands out amidst broader economic challenges, including tariffs and fluctuating consumer sentiment. “While we see consumers pulling back in areas like apparel and technology, they continue to invest in beauty,” Jensen explained. This trend underscores the unique position of beauty products as essential indulgences for many consumers.

Retail Dynamics Shift, Yet Brick-and-Mortar Dominates

As retail dynamics evolve, brick-and-mortar stores remain the primary sales channel for beauty products. However, the rise of e-commerce, particularly through platforms like Amazon, is reshaping the landscape. “Brands need to adopt an omnichannel strategy,” Jensen advised, stressing the importance of providing consumers with tactile experiences in-store while also catering to online shoppers.

Fragrance and hair care are leading the charge in growth, with prestige fragrance sales increasing by 6 percent, translating to a $3.9 million opportunity. Meanwhile, mass fragrance sales skyrocketed by 17 percent, driven by both luxury and affordable options. Jensen noted that consumers are prioritizing fragrance, with artisanal and celebrity brands gaining traction.

Hair Care and Makeup Trends

The hair care segment is also thriving, with a notable emphasis on wellness products. Jensen pointed out that the prestige market accounts for about 15 percent of total hair sales, but innovation is driving significant growth. Treatments addressing hair thinning and promoting growth are particularly popular, with scalp care products seeing a remarkable 19 percent increase.

Conversely, the makeup category faces challenges, especially in the mass market, attributed to store closures in drugstores. However, the prestige segment remains robust, with consumers gravitating towards luxury products for self-care. Lip treatments, including balms and oils, are experiencing strong demand, while prestige eye makeup has rebounded, largely due to mascara sales.

A Bright Outlook for Beauty

As the back-to-school season unfolds and the holiday shopping period approaches, Jensen maintains an optimistic outlook for beauty sales in the U.S. “We will see growth through the end of the year and into 2026,” she stated, reinforcing the belief that the beauty industry will continue to thrive despite economic challenges.
