Vicksburg, MS: New Partnership Set to Boost Small Business Innovation in Defense Sector

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — In a significant move to bolster small business opportunities and enhance Mississippi’s role in defense innovation, state leaders and federal officials convened at MCITy in Vicksburg on Wednesday to celebrate a new partnership with ERDCWERX.

Governor Tate Reeves, alongside Paul Sumrall, director of ERDCWERX, and Dr. Beth Fleming, deputy director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering collaboration between ERDCWERX, the Mississippi Development Authority, and the Mississippi Apex Accelerator.

“This partnership is a game-changer,” said Dr. Fleming. “By leveraging our resources, we can enhance collaboration with small businesses and higher education, paving the way for commercializing ERDC capabilities and facilitating vital technology transfers.”

The MOU is expected to invigorate Mississippi’s small business community, particularly those focused on innovation and defense. Governor Reeves praised the efforts of ERDC and its Vicksburg-based research teams, emphasizing their global impact. “The technology developed here is world-class, and this agreement will solidify Mississippi as a leader in innovation,” he stated.

Highlighting the economic potential, Reeves noted that Mississippi has announced over $15 billion in new capital investments in 2024 alone, with projections exceeding $18 billion in 2025. “Small businesses are the heart and soul of our economy,” he added. “This MOU is a critical tool for creating jobs that will shape the next 50 years.”

The governor also spotlighted MCITy, ERDC’s innovation hub, which is fostering high-tech jobs and partnerships with local universities, including Mississippi State and Alcorn State.

“In short, it’s another historic day for Vicksburg and the state of Mississippi,” Reeves concluded. “This MOU represents a tremendous win, and I’m excited to see the positive outcomes it will bring.”

As Mississippi positions itself at the forefront of defense innovation, this partnership marks a promising step toward a thriving future for small businesses in the region.
