Stephen King Issues Rare Apology Following Controversial Tweet on Charlie Kirk’s Death

In an unexpected turn of events, acclaimed author Stephen King has issued a public apology for a politically charged tweet regarding the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The tweet, which sparked significant backlash, was posted shortly after Kirk’s tragic death during an event at Utah Valley University.

King’s initial post on X (formerly Twitter) read, “He advocated stoning gays to death. Just sayin.’” This comment was a response to Fox News host Jesse Watters, who had described Kirk as “a PATRIOT” and not a polarizing figure. The tweet quickly drew ire from various corners of the political spectrum, leading to a wave of criticism directed at King.

By Friday morning, the author had reversed his stance, tweeting, “I apologize for saying Charlie Kirk advocated stoning gays. What he actually demonstrated was how some people cherry-pick Biblical passages.” In a follow-up response to Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who labeled King as “a horrible, evil, twisted liar,” King admitted, “The horrible, evil, twisted liar apologizes. This is what I get for reading something on Twitter w/o fact-checking. Won’t happen again.” He later reiterated his apology, stating, “I was wrong, and I apologize. I have deleted the post.”

This incident comes at a time when King is in the spotlight for the release of the film adaptation of his 1979 dystopian novel, The Long Walk, which is receiving rave reviews and boasts a 93 percent positive critic average on Rotten Tomatoes.

King is not alone in facing backlash for comments related to Kirk’s assassination. MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd was recently fired for suggesting that Kirk’s “hateful words” contributed to his own murder. This has prompted a broader conversation about the responsibility of public figures in discussing sensitive political issues.

In light of the controversy, top executives at NBC and MSNBC issued a memo urging employees to embrace diverse perspectives. They emphasized the importance of fostering civil dialogue, stating, “We should be able to disagree, robustly and passionately, but, ultimately, with respect. We need to do better.”

As the nation grapples with the implications of Kirk’s death and the reactions it has provoked, King’s apology serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between free speech and accountability in today’s polarized political climate.
