Empowering Futures: Gaye Njorro Skills Academy Bridges Cultures Through Cosmetology

Gaye Njorro and U.S. Partners Transform Afro Hair Education

Banjul, The Gambia – In a vibrant celebration of culture and education, Fatou Seine Gaye, the Chief Executive Officer of Gaye Njorro Skills Academy, has unveiled a transformative partnership with U.S.-based cosmetologist LaDosha Wright. This collaboration, which began over a decade ago, aims to empower young Gambians through vocational education, particularly in the field of cosmetology.

Gaye’s journey into the world of beauty and education took flight in 2011 when she was invited by the U.S. Embassy to speak on hair and accreditation. “People often think Africans just know how to do hair naturally, but there’s real science behind it,” she emphasized. “You need to understand the scalp, the hair, the chemistry, and the health before you style.”

This realization sparked a mission of advocacy and training, leading to the establishment of Gaye Njorro Skills Academy as a NAQAA-accredited institution. The academy now licenses and certifies cosmetologists under the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA), marking a significant milestone in vocational training in The Gambia.

Gaye’s passion for youth and women’s empowerment is palpable. “When I see women succeed, I believe a nation can be built,” she stated. “At Gaye Njorro, we train young women not just to work, but to think, create, and lead.”

LaDosha Wright, a licensed salon owner and Afro hair activist, echoed Gaye’s sentiments, emphasizing that their collaboration transcends beauty. “Our mission is to teach the science of Afro hair,” she explained. “We want students to improve consultations, solve scalp and hair issues, and build confidence in their craft.”

Wright highlighted the historical significance of Afro-textured hair, referencing pioneering research by Dr. Willie Morrow, who studied hair and skin challenges among men of color in the 1960s. “It’s time to bring that science home,” she said. “This exchange reconnects us through culture, education, and pride.”

The academy now offers training in various fields, including cosmetology, tailoring, culinary arts, and design, equipping students with practical skills for immediate employment. The intercultural exchange operates on the principle of “one teach, one,” allowing both Gambian and international participants to learn from each other’s expertise.

Julanda Zachary, another partner in the initiative, praised the academy’s holistic approach to vocational training. “What Fatou has built here is extraordinary,” she remarked. “In America, vocational skills like tailoring and hospitality are in high demand, yet rare. These students are learning practical, profitable skills that can change their lives immediately.”

Zachary, who has extensive experience in hospitality, plans to train students in casual fine dining and professional service. “Serving food, presenting it well, and treating customers with care—that’s hospitality,” she noted. “And it’s something you can do anywhere in the world.”

As Gaye Njorro Skills Academy continues to empower the next generation, it stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, proving that African beauty is not just an art but a science, culture, and a powerful force for change. “When women rise, the nation rises with them,” Gaye concluded, encapsulating the spirit of this transformative initiative.
