McAllen Calls on US DOT to Restore Aeroméxico Route to AIFA

McAllen Officials Urge DOT to Reinstate Aeroméxico Flight Route

McAllen, Texas — In a bold move to safeguard regional connectivity and economic growth, city officials from McAllen have formally requested the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to reverse its recent decision to revoke Aeroméxico’s flight authorization between McAllen International Airport and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in Mexico.

In a letter dated October 31, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos, Deputy Mayor Víctor Haddad, City Manager Isaac Tawil, and several city commissioners expressed their concerns to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. They warned that the suspension of this vital route would have detrimental effects on cross-border trade, regional connectivity, and the local economy in the Rio Grande Valley.

“The suspension of this service affects families, businesses, and institutions on both sides of the border,” the letter stated. “We recognize your commitment to fostering a fair air market for U.S. airlines. However, we ask that such efforts focus on markets where competition exists or is expected. In McAllen’s case, no U.S. airline competes — or has shown interest in competing — with Aeroméxico’s route.”

The DOT’s decision, announced last week, included the cancellation of 13 routes operated by Mexican carriers, citing the Mexican government’s reduction of flight slots at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and the transfer of cargo operations to AIFA as factors negatively impacting U.S. airlines.

McAllen officials argue that the Aeroméxico route is more than just a flight; it serves as a “lifeline” that fosters personal and commercial ties between the two nations. According to city data, McAllen’s airport activity generates approximately $1.2 billion in annual economic output, supporting over 8,400 direct jobs and contributing $356 million in payroll.

“Maintaining this route is critical for sustaining regional growth and binational collaboration,” the letter emphasized. “Canceling this connection does not promote competitive fairness; it weakens essential connectivity for our region.”

Aeroméxico has until November 7 to continue operating the service while the DOT reviews the request. As the deadline approaches, the city remains hopeful that the DOT will reconsider its decision, recognizing the importance of this route for the community and the broader economic landscape.

The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the future of cross-border travel and trade, making it a pivotal moment for McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley.
