Trump Urges Senate Republicans to Abolish Filibuster Amid Ongoing Shutdown

Washington, D.C. — In a bold move to address the ongoing government shutdown, President Donald Trump called on Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster during a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on November 7, 2025. The president’s remarks came as tensions escalated over the legislative impasse, with Trump asserting that abolishing the 60-vote threshold is essential for the GOP to effectively govern.

“The way to do it for the Republicans is to terminate the filibuster,” Trump stated emphatically, suggesting that the current stalemate is a significant misstep for the party. Despite the president’s insistence, Senate GOP leaders have expressed skepticism, indicating that there is insufficient support to dismantle the longstanding procedural rule.

“That’s too bad; they’re making a big mistake,” Trump remarked, maintaining that the party’s reluctance to act could jeopardize their electoral prospects. He argued that only “a foolish person would be against” such a move, emphasizing that it is illogical for Republicans to resist a strategy that could empower them to pass legislation more efficiently.

Trump further claimed that if Republicans were to act decisively, they would secure a significant advantage in upcoming elections. “If we do it, we will never lose the midterms, and we will never lose the general election,” he asserted, promising that the party would deliver substantial benefits to the American people.

When pressed about the duration of the shutdown, Trump remained noncommittal, stating, “I don’t know. It’s up to the Democrats.” He accused Democrats of obstructing progress, claiming they have voted against reopening the government multiple times. “The Republicans have voted 14 times to open up the country; the Democrats have voted 14 times to hurt the country,” he said.

The president’s comments come at a critical juncture, as the nation grapples with the implications of the shutdown. Trump expressed confidence that if the filibuster were abolished, the government could be reopened “within 10 minutes” of that decision.

As discussions continue, the possibility of a bipartisan agreement remains uncertain. “I don’t know; we’ll see what they have,” Trump concluded, leaving the door open for potential negotiations with Democratic leaders.

With the political landscape shifting rapidly, all eyes will be on the Senate as lawmakers weigh the implications of Trump’s call to action.
