Halsey Transitions to Film with Upcoming Release of Americana
Halsey Makes Her Mark in Film with ‘Americana’
Los Angeles, CA — Halsey is stepping into the spotlight not just as a chart-topping musician but as a burgeoning film star. The singer-songwriter’s first major film project, Americana, is set to hit theaters on August 15, following its premiere at SXSW in 2023.
Directed by Tony Tost, Americana is a modern western that weaves together the lives of several characters embroiled in a violent struggle over a valuable Native American ghost shirt. Halsey, who plays the character Mandy, shared her excitement at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Sunday, revealing the personal journey that accompanied her transition into acting.
“I’d been waiting a really long time, I’d been really cautiously picky about what I was going to do for my first project,” Halsey told The Hollywood Reporter. “Little did I know we were going to be making it during COVID, which was a crazy experience. From the moment I read the script until we started shooting, I got pregnant, had a whole pregnancy, gave birth to my son, and had my son on set with me. It’s really serendipitous to Mandy’s arc in the film.”
The film also features a star-studded cast, including Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Simon Rex, Eric Dane, and Zahn McClarnon. Halsey and Sweeney share a special connection, having previously collaborated on Halsey’s 2019 music video for “Graveyard.”
Reflecting on their friendship, Halsey said, “We were actually hanging out a bunch during COVID, so when I got the call she was doing the movie, it was like, ‘Oh cool, I’ll see you there.’ It was just really great to have someone to learn from, to ask questions to — the stupid questions you don’t think of.”
As Halsey navigates her new role in the film industry, she is also developing a dark comedy series titled Bloodlust for Amazon, where she will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. The series will be directed by Ti West, known for his work on MaXXXine.
“I started the pilot a few years ago, and Amazon wanted it, and now we’re getting it on the road,” Halsey explained. “It’s quite relieving to be part of a project that I don’t face. Just behind the scenes, just the puppet master. I don’t have to do my makeup!”
With Americana set to debut in theaters soon, fans are eager to see how Halsey’s unique journey influences her performance and the stories she chooses to tell in the future. As she continues to break new ground in her career, one thing is clear: Halsey is a force to be reckoned with, both on stage and on screen.
