Senators Work Through Weekend to Resolve Ongoing Government Shutdown

As the government shutdown stretches into its 39th day, senators are convening over the weekend in a desperate bid to forge a bipartisan agreement that has eluded them for weeks. The shutdown has left federal workers unpaid, disrupted air travel, and delayed crucial SNAP benefits for millions of Americans.

The urgency of the situation was palpable as Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) announced plans to keep the Senate in session until a resolution is reached. “Ideally, it would be great to set it up so we could vote today,” Thune stated, emphasizing the need for swift action.

However, the path to a solution remains murky. President Donald Trump has made it clear that he is unwilling to compromise with Democrats, who are advocating for an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), who is spearheading discussions among moderates, expressed the need for a new approach after a previous offer from Democratic leader Chuck Schumer was rejected. “We’re working on it,” she said, highlighting the ongoing negotiations that could lead to funding for essential government services like food aid and veterans programs.

The proposed agreement would fund parts of the government while extending funding for other areas until December or January, contingent upon a promise of a future health care vote. However, it remains uncertain whether enough Democrats will support such a plan, especially given Trump’s reluctance to endorse an extension of health benefits.

Republican leaders need just five additional votes to fund the government, and the group of moderate Democrats involved in the talks ranges from 10 to 12 senators. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) echoed this sentiment, advocating for a shift in how subsidies are distributed. “Take the money away from health insurance companies and let’s flow it to the people to give them more purchasing power,” he stated.

In a twist, Trump has urged Republicans to end the shutdown quickly and eliminate the filibuster, which requires 60 Senate votes for most legislation. However, Republican leaders have resisted this call, with Thune favoring a bipartisan package that aligns with the moderate Democrats’ proposal.
